selenay: (tony/bruce)
Cut for length - takeout and me )

I'm reading "Stark Disassembled", one of the Invincible Iron Man trades. Mostly because Reed Richards keeps referring to that time Tony restored his brain from a backup that was out of date. I wanted to see whether Reed is just being a dick or whether Tony actually did that.

Tony actually did that.

From a hard drive.

Oh dear.

The next time fandom tries to convince me that someone's Avengers fic is improbable due to the laws of physics and computing, I'll point them to that time Tony backed up his brain to a portable hard drive and then did a system restore from it. Because that's *so* within the realms of current technology :-D

Also, Reed is definitely a dick but he does have a point about Tony needing to do regular backups if he's going to RESTORE HIS BRAIN FROM ONE. Heh :-D

Avengers canon, never get less crazy. Seriously, ILU. You are my favourite.

I've been in a grumpy funk for the last week or so, which sucks, and I haven't been able to pull myself out of it. This morning the radio was playing a bunch of make-Sel-happy tunes (Meatloaf!) and I actually sang along and felt pretty cheerful when I got to work. The plan today is told hold onto that cheerful feeling and try not to sink back into the grump funk.

So I'm trying to find things that I'm happy about to discuss today :-D

Apparently Captain America 2 has started filming and they've released info that says we're getting a bigger role for Natasha and Peggy is back. Woot!

I'm pretty excited about this film now. Natasha, Peggy, the Winter Soldier, Falcon...it's looking pretty sweet.

Together with the trailers I've seen for Iron Man 3 (Pepper!) and the info I've seen on Thor 2 (more Sif! more Darcy!), Marvel is doing exceedingly well right now at creating films I want to see. And as Joss is helming Avengers 2 and has a lot of influence on the SHIELD TV show, I'm feeling pretty confident and happy that we're getting some excellent stuff from Marvel for a long time. The new synopsis for the TV show (I'm surprisingly OK with the new title - Marvel's Agents of SHIELD at least won't be confused with The Shield) sounds very promising and I'm going to be shocked if ABC doesn't pick it up.

Well done, Marvel, you're doing a rather excellent job of creating things with plenty of appeal for all the genders. Take note, DC.

On the comics front, I'm officially a Marvel girl. Not just because I love the various Avengers lines, but also because lines like Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, and Fearless Defenders are amazing as well. I started out reading some DC lines but I've dropped pretty much all of them :-( Marvel's lines are a lot more fun and I don't get ragey over the treatment of their female characters.

*sigh*

Anyway, I got the email from my local comic shop about what's being released this week and realised that around three-quarters of my pull list comes out tomorrow. Definitely making a trip to the city on Saturday to pick that up! I've been reading the Age of Ultron book and I'm intrigued to see what the tie-in issue of Avengers Assemble will be like.

I suspect Saturday afternoon will be spent with big pot of tea and my lovely new comics. Heh.
selenay: (stupid ass decision)
It's only a week into January and I finished my first book of the year. Ha! Er, usually I'm closer to having finished two at this stage. OH WELL.

I mean, it's not like I'm not reading. There's been a lot of fanfic to read. And also comics. My entire "must read Marvel Civil War" thing has been justified by the first page of issue #1 of the new New Avengers. It references a big *thing* that happened in the early stages of that arc. See? See? Told you reading all of that would be important!

Speaking of, my hold on Civil War: Spider-man just activated so I should have that to read by the weekend.

Just after I read Amazing Spider-man #700, which I had to pick up just to find out why the Internet exploded over it.

I'm looking at the long-range forecast and apparently my next Friday off will have a snow storm. Ugh. That forecast is still nearly two weeks out, though, so it could still change. Right? I could still get over to the city to pick up a massive comics haul that day, couldn't I? Er.

It looks like this is the week when winter finally gets fierce. My drive to work today was horrible and I suspect there will be a fair bit of working from home in my future. I got to witness a near accident up close and personal when a van lost control on the highway. Thankfully he didn't go into my lane and the other drivers were able to avoid him as he slid across theirs. THIS IS WHY I DON'T DRIVE ON BAD MORNINGS. It's not just that I'm not a confident driver in snow/ice (although that's a big part of it, but there are other drivers causing accidents even when I'm managing to drive in a straight line. Ugh, winter.

I also dumped half a bag of safety salt on my drive today to make it safe for me to walk. So I'll have to remember to buy more salt when I'm at the store next. Blargh, salt. The cats are going to be licking my shoes constantly for the next two months.

Can I have the kind of winter back that's incredibly cold but dry? Please?

Someone *cough*[livejournal.com profile] sugoll*cough* indicated that there might be some interest in hearing about my attempt to read all the Civil War books. So here you go.

I've learned about the broad outline of the Civil War event that Marvel did so it's not too difficult for me to read whatever I can get from the library in any order. Part of me doesn't want to read it (because ow) and another part of me needs to read it because it's such a big part of the back-story in a lot of Marvel lines. So I'm grabbing everything from the library, girding my loins and plunging in.

Currently I'm reading a massive book that seems to combine the trades issues as Civil War: X-Men Universe, Civil War: Wolverine and Civil War: X-Men so I'll talk about those later. I've also got another huge book that collects all the different Avengers issues to read when I'm done with that.

The first thing to arrive from the library, though, was this little number:

Civil War: Young Avengers and Runaways
I hadn't read anything about any of these characters before so the little precis on each one and their history at the beginning was very useful! I'd heard people discussing Teddy and Billy so I knew a little about them. I've also been reading the new Hawkeye series so I'd met Kate Bishop.

The book is mostly working on the outskirts of the main Civil War storyline, showing just how ugly it got when it extended to the younger superheroes. It didn't pull many punches and the villain of the piece wasn't just evil, he was downright creepy.

It didn't seem to be a book that was crucial to the main Civil War storyline but I did finish it itching to read more Young Avengers books.

So, it turns out that our oven is kind of insane and decided to randomly reset itself to factory settings, which is why it was no longer heating correctly because its temperature whatsit was confused and not the way that we'd set up.

Yeah, no, I didn't understand it when Mum explained. But she showed me how to fix it and promised the repair guys didn't laugh too much. It also turns out that we've been misusing one setting for the last two years because nowhere in the instruction manual did it tell us that you need to press the convection button twice in order to have the elements working that will actually brown things.

Helpful. Real helpful. GE, you may want to include that information in your manual.

Apparently Mum will be baking today so we'll get to see whether this works.

I am somewhat inappropriately excited about getting the first issue of the new Hawkeye comic today. Sadly, I must wait until I get home to hop onto Comixology. Woecakes.

There are two people standing in my office trying to fix things who are supposed to be on vacation. Thank goodness I'm no longer on that team. Apparently August is going to be a bitch.

Note to self: it's Wednesday, dammit, keep remembering that.

Note to self 2: sleep is a good thing, try it some day.

Cut for work stuff )

Also, apparently I cannot type or proof-read my documents. Every change request that I've sent in this week has been initially rejected because I make tiny typos. Yesterday I had two periods in a file name. Today I have typed in incorrect file extensions. I'm thoroughly annoyed wih myself.

Next week there will be a five day break between sporting events. My evenings will be oddly empty. Maybe I'll actually do some reading or something. I have got quite the reading list of stuff that I need to finish by the end of the month, after all. I really need to get further with GRRM and there are a couple of novelette's to finish as well.

Shockingly, I have less that ten graphic novels out from the library and the to read stack on my coffee table looks downright reasonable. Until you realise that five of them are due at the library next week. Um, oops?

I can safely say that I'm thoroughly enjoying the first volume of the newer Avengers series by Brian Michael Bendis (as differenciated from all the other multitudes of Avengers lines including New Avengers, which I'm also enjoying from Comixology) and I'm looking forward to the Hawkeye stuff that's next on my pile.

Mum (my library mule) says that I have to restrain myself from putting Buffy Season 8 on hold until the to be read stack is down to only one or two books. She may have a point.

So next Friday, I'll put All The Buffy! on hold :-D

And on August 1st, I'm going through my back-log on Comixology and reading all of those because I will be done with Hugo reading and allowed to read Other Books and Stuff Not Due At The Library.

I'll also be hiding in some Mercedes Lackey and some Scalzi for a few days plus all the lovely treats waiting on my Kindle, such as Huntress by Malinda Lo.

So. Much. Reading. Yay :-D

Note to self 3: remember that you're on a writing deadline and need to actually write even when the Hugo and library reading catch-up are over and you're drowning yourself in fluff and fun.

ETA: I found out last night that Mum has been reading some of the stuff that I get from the library, like the occasional volume of Fables (she likes Bigby a lot) and one of the X-Men books. My poor mother, turning into a nerd by osmosis :-D
selenay: (brain to mush)
Things I have learned today:

1) If I get everything measured and ready the night before, there is actually time to make porridge in the mornings some work days.

2) Although I love chocolate a great deal, I do not actually like chocolate chips on my porridge. No, not even the 65% cocoa really good chocolate chips. Apparently my preference will always be dark brown sugar (with cinnamon, raisins and pumpkin seeds mixed in, I'm not completely without love of tasty things). Ah, well, these things must be tested.

3) My mornings are highly unsuccessful if I am insufficiently caffienated.

4) If I read Game of Thrones in church (while waiting for the service to start, not during the sermon or anything) Tyrion will have wild sex even though that is probably the only sex scene for most of the first twenty chapters and why did those pages have to be right there at that particular moment OMG so embarassing and wrong I hope nobody was reading over my shoulder.

*deep breath*

Here endeth the lessons.

And now...Avengers!

Cut for spoilers because talking about how great this is without spoilers is impossible )

And now, my fannish heart overfloweth and I am spending the day at work not seeing anything bad or infuriating. Thus no news sites, no blogs about anything serious, and if I can manage it there will be minimal interaction with Oracle Report Builder for it is the spawn of Satan. I shall mostly be doing boring data import stuff, poking the fun side of the Internet and letting my joy be complete.

Bugger. Someone sent me a meeting invite for this afternoon. Can't you see that I'm being merry and fannish and do not want to discuss project risks that are mainly "Oracle is a bastard, it should be killed with fire"?

Um, the comic thing could be very bad. Have bought the first volume of Fables, both issues of Demon Knights and the second issue of Stormwatch.

Oh dear.

And I think that I may be enjoying Demon Knights a tiny bit more than Stormwatch. They're both excellent, though.

Dad flies back to England tonight. He's possibly going to start packing soon.

I'm very tired, but I want to at least try to catch up on some of the things on my PVR. So I may try watching Once Upon A Time after he's left from the airport - two RL friends really enjoyed it so I've got hopes for it.

Why isn't it nearly the weekend?

Oh dear

Important news: homemade granola = best breakfast ever.

We used this recipe (http://www.joyofbaking.com/breakfast/HomemadeGranola.html), cooked for 20 minutes rather than 30 and added pecans to the ingredients. Om nom. I wanted twenty bowls for brekkie.

So far, the only person who has stuck needles in me this month is me. Obviously this cannot continue so I rectified the situation by getting my flu shot. Yay?

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gaspodex I now have comics on my iPod Touch and am ridiculously impatient to acquire the iPad so that I can view them on that. It's a rather lovely app (Comics by Comixology for the curious) and I grabbed a few free things plus the first issues of Fables, Stormwatch and Sandman.

This could be a disaster, right?

Dad goes home tomorrow. Woe! But, er, I'll see him on Skype at the weekend so it's not as sad as it could be. We've actually had time together, which is better than his last visit (he worked the entire time including evenings) and my visit to England in February (he worked the entire time including evenings). So it's been lovely and I've enjoyed the visit.

Although, I am looking forward to the household being back to 'normal'. And being able to watch Holby and Strictly without looks of deep disapproval.
