It was SDCC weekend so many, many, many trailers were debuted. The new Star Trek: Discovery trailer made me particularly happy, as did the Doctor Who Christmas trailer. It's going to be so weird, in a really great way, to have two of my longest-time fandoms in active production.

I really need to post that alternate Christmas episode ending fic. Really. Before it gets totally Joss-ed. I have the feeling Thirteen might be the Doctor I actually write for. All my other DW fic has been companion-centric. It would be interesting to write Doctor-centric fic :-D

(See, I can find a way to bring all posts around to Thirteen.)

For my fellow femslash fans, [community profile] femslashex is running again this year! And running a few weeks early, so nominations open TOMORROW. Sign-ups are running from 13 to 23 August, which is a relief because it means sign-ups are going to still be open (just) after I get back from England. Phew!

Hoe many Thirteen pairings do you think people will nominate? Hmm...

There are a couple of posts in the comm outlining other small changes to the fest. The one that I am a fan of is making request visible during sign-ups, which will help people to check whether their collection of tiny fandom requests/offers is making them matchable or not. And it'll give us some extra time to write treats if we want :-)

Femslashex is one of my favourite fests so I highly reommend it if femslash is your thing in any way.

Must get that planning post for England up.

Must buy a suitcase.

Must write a to do list of everything I need to do in the next week (!!!) before I leave.

Dear Femslashex Writer,

First of all, an early "Thank you!" for writing a fic in one of my fandoms. That alone has made me happy. If you've already got the perfect idea, please, go ahead and write it! If you want to know more about what I love about these pairings and prompts I've been mulling, I've thrown some thoughts together below.

I'm happy with any rating you're comfortable writing for.

General likes: I am a total sucker for tropes: accidental marriage, fake dating, stuck in a cabin, baby on the doorstep, cheesy AUs, the works. Throw them at me! I adore competent women kicking ass, women bonding, get together fics and figuring out how to stay together fics. I read fic to get the happy endings that are often missing in real life and in canon.

Dislikes: Death fic, sad endings, BDSM and heavy kink, graphic violence, dub-con/non-con, character bashing, cheating/adultery.

[community profile] femslashex sign-ups are open and I'm having my usual flailing internal debate about what I want and why and so forth.

And also, my huge flailing ARGH over the fact that, in all likelihood, I'm the only person who even knows what Holby City is, which means I'm highly unlikely to get Bernie/Serena fic in either offer or request. Woe and so forth. I just...I need it. My show isn't giving it to me yet, despite Bernie's realisation that she's falling for Serena, and I need to read the slow burning fall as Serena has her revelation moment and they finally get together...

::sigh:: I'll request and offer, with no expectation of getting anything. And try to narrow my other choices down to something reasonable :😁

My other thought is...huh, my holiday didn't turn out to be as horrible for my credit card as I expected. That's quite nice. I was expecting to have a much bigger bill to pay. What a lovely surprise!

At Nine Worlds, I promised some notes on the locations of some older femslash fanfic, so here we go!

The main femslash archive back in the day, where most of us went first for fic, was The Pink Rabbit. It's still available, although no new fic has been posted in several years, at And the person who ran it is still posted their excellent f/f fanart on AO3! Which was a nice surprise: PinkRabbitPro.

The Xena writer who ended up writing a couple of episodes for the show is Melissa Good, who writes Xena/Gabrielle fic and a long-running Xena Uber fic (Dar/Kerry) under Merwolf. Her page is Merwolf's Cave. The episodes she wrote were in season six, "Coming Home" and "Legacy".

One of the big archives for Xena fic was The Royal Academy of Bards. "Alternative" was ye olde term for F/F, and Mel & Janice were the in-show reincarnations of Xena and Gabrielle who spawned the Uber genre. Some of the old Uber fics have disappeared from the web (when authors pulled them to publish as f/f romance--if you're reading a lesbian romance from the late 90s/early 2000s and it has a suspiciously familiar combination of character archetypes...yeah, a lot of Ubers were pulled to publish way before 50 Shades did it!), but a fair number of fics are still on the old archives.

If anyone knows Xena authors who haven't put their stuff onto AO3, a legion of new and old Xena readers would be grateful if you could nudge them!

The big Buffy femslash archives have all long since gone inactive. Many of them were killed by the great Geocities purge, or by the Tripod decimation before that. Woe. A few of the fics are still on Pink Rabbit and you can try following some of the links over there, but be prepared for a lot of page not found errors.

The Janeway/Seven fic I mentioned, Just Between Us, can be found on Gina L Dartt's website. Luckily, she's still maintaining her site so it hasn't been lost to the mists of time!

If anyone remembers anything we discussed and isn't here, let me know and I'll try to track it down. In the meantime, happy reading!

(PS. [community profile] femslashex is the annual femslash ficathon, and sign-ups will be opening shortly. It's a terrific exchange.)

*blows dust off blog*

Ahem. Yes. I am terrible about updating. BUT. I figured it might be handy if I listed somewhere which panels I'm on at Nine Worlds THIS WEEKEND OMG HOW IS IT SO SOON. Don't believe the schedule - there's a small back-end issue with one of my panels, where I had to turn one down due to a clash but the listing still has me down on the turned down one. Woops!

So, if you want to see me be geeky, here's where you can find me:

Friday, 3.15pm: Writing Superheroes

Join Emma (signe_chan), Ollie, and I as we discuss writing superheroes in our fic. The ins and outs, the interesting aspects to explore, the way fic explores superpowers. However you define superheroes and superpowers, whether it's DC/Marvel or Buffy, this is the panel to be at.

Friday, 5pm: WILD SPECULATION: Star Trek

Round-table speculation about the movies and the forthcoming TV series. The wilder the idea, the better!

Saturday, 11.45am: History of Femslash

Llyn, Cleo, Roz Kaveny and I will be talking about femslash and its history, discussing where it began, where we all began in it, and how it has changed over the years. Whether you're new to femslash or an old hand, this is a panel for you! Wanna know what the first written femslash pairing probably was? Or what in heck a Xena Uber was? (And why so much lesbian fiction from the early 2000s looks suspiciously Xena-like?) Audience participation is encouraged and we'll be trying to put together an actual timeline on a large piece of paper during the panel.

Sunday, 9am: Why we love femslash

Despite the early hour, this is a celebration panel! Why do we love femslash? What are the tropes and stories we adore? Come and spend 45 minutes squeeing with Llyn, Cleo, and I about the joys of f/f romance in our favourite shows, books, and movies. There's only one rule: the phrase "femslash is better than dudeslash because..." is outlawed :-D

Dear Femslashex creator,

First of all, don't get worried about me or the length of this letter. I'm pretty much going to love what you do because you're writing or arting for one of my f/f pairings and that's a win in my book :-) If you've already got an idea for one of them, and it doesn't hit any of my squicks, go for it! Something coming from the heart is always the best thing. I'm equally happy with fic or art, and generally any rating goes for me.

If you want ideas or more info, read on! I tried to give some prompts for each pairing, just because that's what I find easiest to work from, but optional details are optional.

General likes:

Competent women, plots, case fic, getting together fics, happy endings, all the AUs, all the tropes, cabin fic, fake relationships leading to more, friends to lovers, trope subversion, women geeking out over science, banter, enthusiastic consent, bisexual characters, women being awesome

Last night, I dreamed that [personal profile] paranoidangel and I produced a comic series that a big comic publisher wanted to commission and turn into some huge mega book of awesome. Which, if you know either of us and our drawing abilities, is utterly hilarious. For some reason, one of the panels included Sitwell backflipping down a church aisle. PA isn't even in Avengers fandom, so why we'd jointly do a comic with Sitwell in is beyond me.

(Sadly, Sitwell was evil. Sorry, guys.)

In less weird news, I have a finished first draft for [community profile] femslashex! Woot! I no longer feel horribly stressed about that. Horribly stressed about other things, but not that.

I keep poking the NaNo site, waiting for the reset. Ugh, waiting is horrible.

So, I bring you more teevees instead!

Every now and again, I look at the responsibilities I have and the number of people who come to me looking for guidance or consultation on projects...and I have a momentary freak out. Why do people keep thinking I know stuff? Why do they want my approval before they do things? Why do they think I can fix this?

And then I do it, fixing the things and providing answers and showing people what to do, and I realise...yeah. This has happened because I'm actually pretty good at my job.

In my head, I'm still that scared seventeen year old kid who'll never figure out what she wants, and is about to spend around eight years going down various paths before settling into something. In my head, I don't have eight years of experience in IT and a bunch of successful projects behind me. My headcanon for myself doesn't match reality.

It's a little odd, sometimes. Hopefully I'm not the only person who feels that way :-D

In other news…

I have finally broken ground on my [community profile] femslashex fic. This is possibly the latest I've ever got before starting an exchange fic, so I'm slightly freaking out, but it'll be fine. It's not going to be a novel, but that's probably a good thing. I'm trying to edit several long fics (two over 40k) and taking on another big fic just before NaNo might break me. It's not the pairing or the POV character I thought that I'd pick when I got my assignment.

I'm actually pretty happy to have picked it, though. Even if it means I'm going for a rarepair within a fandom with a really low femslash percentage.

At some stage, I really need to write a sequel for last year's femslashex fic.

At some stage, I need to write that Jane/Sif role reversal fic I keep getting bunnied for with gifs on Tumblr.

At some stage, I need to work out what will be my Christmas fic.

There are two many 'at some stage' notes in this post :-D
selenay: (avengers 2)
[community profile] femslashex assignments were out this weekend and I love mine to itty bitty pieces. I have no idea what I matched on because two of the fandoms are ones I offered with pairings I offered and I'm inspired about fics for both. Oops?

I'm now two weeks away from the final draft deadline on Marvel Big Bang and the beta-ing has been going better than expected. It's all tweaks and typos so I'm still feeling confident about being done on time despite the incredible length of this novel. And the good thing is that I still really like the fic and feel very pleased with what I've achieved, so it's all good there.

Agents of SHIELD has been seen and much enjoyed. It was even better on my second viewing, with all the adverts removed. Ads really interrupt the flow of a good show. AoS isn't without its issues, ones that I'm hoping get addressed as time goes on, but as a pilot that was trying to show what it could be and set up a whole whack of things I thought it was great.

Things I'm looking forward to seeing more of (non-spoilery):

- FitzSimmons and their beautiful twinny friendship. Anyone who's read a lot of my Avengers fic may note how much I love playing with male/female deep friendship (Clint and Natasha are wonderful to write) and the FitzSimmons relationship plays into all my favourite tropes for that so far. I really want a couple of episodes focused on those two and their beautiful broship.

- Melinda May. So much mystery and so much history, we need to have some Melinda focused episodes.

- Grant Ward's incredible lack of sense of humour and people skills. Really, that's just crying out to be one of the running jokes of the series and I kind of look forward to him looking pained and tolerant as Fitzsimmons and Skye make with the mocking and the hilarity around him.

- Skye. I'm intrigued and I want to know who she really is. I kind of also like the mentor/protege vibe she's getting with Coulson, I think that's got some terrific possibilities.

- Coulson. On my telly box every week. With mysteries he doesn't even know he's in the middle of and that wonderfully determined belief that everyone deserves saving. Someone said he's the ultimate Hufflepuff and I really think that's the perfect way to see him.

- Arcs. Looks like we're getting lots of arcs and themes and that really hits all the things I love in a show.

Yup, I'm a happy fangirl.

And lastly, I may have picked up a new Thing. Sleepy Hollow, how are you so cracktastic and so very awesome?
selenay: (darcy 1)
Dear Femslashex Writer,

Hello lovely person! Thank you for signing up for something I've requested! If you've got a story you've always wanted to tell about any of the pairings I requested, go ahead because the idea you're in love with will always write itself so much easier than a prompt from someone else :-D But if you want to know more about my loves and dislikes, read on.

General things I like: Kissing, happy endings, adventure, friendship as a basis for love, women rescuing themselves and each other, slow builds and moments of passionate declaration. I have a major weakness for the tropes. All the tropes. e.g. huddle for warmth, cabin fic, amnesia, matchmaking, AUs (particularly the coffee shop variety), fake relationships leading to real ones and so on and so forth forever and ever. Me + Tropes = OTP.

General dislikes: Tragic endings, PWPs, non-con, extreme gore and violence, BDSM etc.
