Pegasus 2: Friday
Feb. 6th, 2007 11:52 amFor the sake of everyone's friends pages, I'm putting the con fun beneath cuts.

Convention follow-up
Feb. 5th, 2007 09:17 pmNo, not the Peg 2 report - I'll start that tomorrow. Instead, it's a tiny bit of thought inspired by a conversation over the weekend.
I've been to both major types of con - big media cons focusing on guests and smaller, fan-run cons focusing on fan activities. Someone at the Peg 2 mentioned that they preferred the fan-run cons and it got me to thinking.
My conclusions is that I love both types of con and wouldn't want to choose between them. Cons like Peg 2 are crazy, fun and leave me fired up about the show(s) they're based around. I enjoy meeting the actors and other guests and it's great to see the fans, even if some of them are rather less sane than I'd like.
I also love cons like Redemption. I get to meet different types of fans, discuss all sorts of things, learn new things and get exposed to new ideas. They're fabulous fun because they're based around all the things that we, as fans, enjoy discussing and taking part in.
Choosing between them is difficult and I don't think that I actually prefer one over the other. Redemption probably stands out as the con that I've had the most fun at, but at the moment I'm still on a total high from Peg 2 and keep wanting to declare it as the Best Con Ever. Going to a couple of each type every year sounds like perfection to me :-)
Out of curiosity, what do the rest of my con-going friends think on the matter?
Speaking of Redemption, anyone on my f-list who might be still considering whether they'd like to go should check out the programme that's gone up. Booking in advance has now closed (I think) but you should still be able to pay at the door :-)
In slightly less cheerful news, it looks like our DVD recorder has died :-( Thankfully Tao of Rodney recorded while I was away, as did the rugby, but we may be recorder-less until Da gets it either fixed or exchanged under warranty. Damn. I'll have to make sure that I'm around to watch Atlantis this week and I'm now really, really hoping we have some recording facility available by Redemption so that I can catch the Oscars ceremony

In a few minutes,
paranoidangel42 should be arriving to convey me to Peg 2. Wooo!
I've just done my packing and I'm honestly terrified - I've got everything on my list, Mum checked the list and confirmed I haven't forgotten anything, but everything fitted into my bag with surprising ease. I'm just not used to that! Hopefully I won't discover that we've both overlooked something vital tonight.
I have started a Going Away List book. Everything I packed today is pretty standard for conventions so the book now has a master list of everything that must be taken to conventions. I'll be constructing lists for Canada trips and other things later. If I have a master list to work from every time, though, things like toothpaste should never be forgotten. I am far too organised sometimes :-)
Now I just have to work out what to do with the free time I unexpectedly have this morning. Hmm.
Peg 2 in a matter of hours and I will return filled with con reports and excitement in a few days. W00t!

At least it's only a day until Peg 2
Feb. 1st, 2007 10:05 amToday I am mostly...trying to do all the things I tried to do yesterday when the data warehouse fell over *sigh* I'm not going anywhere fast, although I don't have to redo the things that got stuck yesterday which should help. I also have many, many meetings with colleagues to go through handover things because I will be out of the office for the next four days.
Wooo!
Today is another walking stick day, so it looks like I'll definitely be walking stick girl at Peg 2. Darn. At least I'm staying at the Sheraton where they have lifts and can register as disabled so I don't have to do too many of the Things That Really Hurt.
Sadly, our cat is being ill :-( He had an emergency trip to the vet last night because he hadn't eaten since Monday and kept being sick. The vet thinks that the stuff she prescribed for his overactive thyroid a couple of weeks ago was too high a dose so it's pushed him the other way. He just thinks he's miserable and why aren't we making him better? The vet gave him something to settle his stomach, but he still hadn't eaten this morning and he was sick again in the night. He also had an accident yesterday evening so we've given him a litter tray, just in case. We're also keeping him in the back room (don't much care about the carpets there) so that his range of destruction is reduced. If he doesn't start eating today, though, he'll have to go back to the vet and she will want to put him on a drip. Poor baby.
We're now trying to decide how much of this we want to put him through considering he's fifteen years old. He's been telling us voluably about how miserable he is right now, although that is a slight improvement from the constant sleeping before he saw the vet last night. We're not sure, though, how ill he's feeling and whether we're doing the right thing.
Looks like I'll have something to worry about while I'm away :-(
It meant that I only caught the last half of last night's Atlantis, The Tao of Rodney. I thoroughly enjoyed what I saw (poor woobie) and will have to leave a video set up for the repeat while I'm at Peg 2 so that I can get the full glory. I do see why everyone was squeeing about it :-)

(no subject)
Jan. 31st, 2007 11:43 amToday I shall mostly be running code as I attempt to make some changes to something I designed a couple of months ago, hampered by the data warehouse which has ground to a shuddering halt. Huh. It's these little things that make my day better.
Da Boss, however, has promised me an exciting new Big Project. I need a nickname for this project. It will involved writing a large, complex tracker, getting user input as to what is actually needed and possibly doing some IT development in conjuction with another team. So, really really big and complex. I am...ridiculously excited by the prospect :-) Such a geek. Really.
The lure of this big project (and getting a couple of my regular jobs assigned to someone else) is making it tough to look seriously at other jobs. Instead, I continue to casually monitor things and see whether anything really tempting appears.
Today is a walking stick day, which doesn't bode well for my mobility at Peg 2 but we'll see how it goes. It's only two days until it starts so that's pretty cool :-)
I am also hungry and have resisted the temptation of the chocolate bar in my desk all morning. I'm feeling very virtuous.

Pretty new features
Jan. 25th, 2007 10:09 amThanks to a post at
torch_wood, I found out that LJ has now enabled syndicated feeds based on a journal's tags, which is very nice. This means that people reading this journal could just get an RSS feed of entries tagged as Haven updates and nothing else, or get all the Doctor Who and Torchwood commentary but none of the other crap I tend to spout :-)
I put some potentially useful feeds in my profile: http://selenay936.livejournal.com/profile
Today is mostly about re-writing code with changes to make caculations more accurate. Fun! I love being a geek :-)
There has been no snow today, which is slightly disappointing :-(
A collegue has been asking about conventions, seeing as I'm booked out for two next month. Peg 2 is relatively easy to explain, but he's not quite getting the concept of Redemption. Somehow, panels and workshops and opportunities to be silly aren't really working for him. He isn't quite sure what the point, or the end result, will be. Hmmm. Not the kind of chap who does things because they're enjoyable, possibly. He's rather more interested in how much they make...
Speaking of Peg 2, it appears that David Nykl is going to be there. He was very good at SG-10, so this is a definite good thing :-) Apparently there will also be two Fandemonium authors there, which might be interesting.

Got Peg 2 ticket
Jan. 23rd, 2007 09:12 amGot my Peg 2 ticket in the post yesterday - number 90 :-)
Anyone on my f-list want to pipe up with ticket numbers (if you have them yet)?
Judging by some of the comments on the Wolf message boards, I'm very glad that
paranoidangel42 and I have already booked our room at the Sheraton - people are starting to report difficulties getting a room! I'm guessing that this won't be quite as small a con as it was last year.
Today I am mostly working and trying to leave at a sensible time. There will be no Internets at home due to all the computer equipment being moved to make way for a new window, but there is Holby City tonight.
I am considering signing up for
femslash07. Would I be totally crazy considering I've never done a ficathon before in my life?
