It's the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide strategising time of year again! I *think* I've got my nomination list fixed. Several fandoms I really want to request/offer in my sign-up are thoroughly covered already so I'm nominating for my tiny fandoms with tiny pairings :-D

The rule change where I can request up to six things on sign-up is going to be so great. Usually I have trouble narrowing my requests down to four, so this year it's going to be a bit easier. And because offering thousands of fandoms apparently doesn't help the matching algorithms, I'm keeping myself to a maximum of ten offers without making a big bucket o' fandoms offer this year.

I suspect half my sign-up, at least, will be me hoping for femslash in my tiny fandoms. How has nobody spotted that Trixie/Cynthia in Call the Midwife is a thing that needs to happen? How is there so little Kate/America in Young Avengers? Why isn't everyone falling onto Valkyrie/Annabelle in Fearless Defenders?

OK, yes, I'm ridiculously excited for Yuletide *already* and by the time sign-ups happen and assignments go out, I'll be slightly ridiculous. As it's the only exchange I'm signing up for this season, I think that I'm allowed to be ridic :-D

My Big Bang editing is...happening. I've finished going through the MS and making copious notes on all the things that I need to do and last night I got the first two chapters edited. As they were the ones that stood out as needing the most work and the largest rewrites, it feels good to have them done. I'm still hoping to have the edited MS out to my beta by Monday but a lot depends on how much time I have to spend doing family stuff this weekend.

Dad is visiting. Mum wants us to be All Family All The Time. It's really bad timing.

Yuletide reveals are now live so I'm posting this while I remember:

Action Hero Figures and Ham Sandwiches (2509 words) by [archiveofourown.org profile] Selenay
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Peter Parker & Flash Thompson
Characters: Peter Parker, Flash Thompson

Summary: When Peter and Flash met, they almost bonded. Until the moment Flash said something stupid.
That has been the pattern of their relationship until now but maybe things are about to change.

So, I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] historyterry at the weekend, babbling about how relieved I was to be nearly done with my Yuletide fic, and he asked me what I'd requested.

Uh.

Seriously, my brain blanked. I'VE FORGOTTEN WHAT I REQUESTED FOR YULETIDE.

I could take a look at my sign-up in AO3 but I've decided to be pleasantly surprised with what I get because seriously, no clue. Not at all. I even remember writing a detailed Dear Yulegoat letter and I still can't remember what I requested. So this year, I'm going to love whatever I get and there will be no nagging "oh, I wish I'd got matched on this other fandom" thoughts because I've got no earthly idea what I might be getting.

How do I remember details of code I wrote three years ago and can't remember what I put up in a sign-up six weeks ago?

Anyway, my Yuletide fic is finished, beta'd and edited. Just need to do a final read-through and then it's getting uploaded and I'm done. Phew!

In other news...

Christmas menu has been rejigged slightly because I'm down one (usually very hungry) guest. My aunt is still insisting on cooking a large turkey. For two of us. I'm being a wee bit more sensible about all the other food so that I'm not eating left-over potatoes for two weeks. There is going to be so much turkey.

The one thing I still need to do is source a Christmas tree. My Annie-cat likes to sleep in the artificial one and the branches are gradually bending due to this. She's only an eight-pound cat but trees aren't really rated for that! So I want to get a real tree because then I won't care if she sleeps in it and bends the branches slightly. Hell, maybe she won't sleep in it due to the prickles!

Last night was a bust. Tree lot at my local firehall was sold out when I got there. Tonight I'm going to a lot my aunt assures me had tons of trees yesterday. Fingers crossed!
selenay: (yuletide)
Dear author,

Firstly, you're writing a fic just for me so don't worry because I'm going to love it. Seriously, that is a given and I'm already flailing about it :-D

I'm pretty easy-going with fic reading. Provided it doesn't contain my absolute, hard, no no no squicks, there's not much that I won't love. My biggest joy is from fics that have a bit of plot and a bit of character stuff. Whether it's fluff, adventure, romance, drama or complete crack, I love it.

The things that I really don't read are death fics, horribly tragic fics, BDSM and other extreme kinks, and mpreg. So, you know, the standard things :-D

So, having said all that you might be looking for some specific guidance. My sign-up optional details are a fairly complete precis of what would make me flail madly, but here you go:

Mission Impossible (movies) )

Call the Midwife )

Parasol Protectorate )

I hope you have fun writing your yuletide fic and I can't wait to see what the results are!

Your grateful recipient,
Selenay.

My [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic is done, posted and complete. Go me!

Now, I may be playing with a couple of little Treats...

You know those weekends where you have loads of plans and a time table that, if followed perfectly, will ensure that you get everything done?

And you know how plans always fall apart due to miscalculations like running out of mince meat and cats knocking over the Christmas tree?

Yeah.

The good news is that it was only the little tree downstairs and it was easy to fix. The tree is now being hidden under the stairs unless I'm at home and awake to supervise.

And I've got more mince meat marinating so the mince pies for the work thing on Wednesday can still happen.

OK, yes, no cards got written and I'd planned to have the pies made and ready to bake so that Tuesday evening would be less fraught...

I love Christms but I always get over confident about my plans. At least my Yuletide fic is pretty much done and will be uploaded tomorrow. How is everyone else doing on the Christmas insanity?

Please don't let that be a cat with a bauble that I can hear...
selenay: (yuletide)
Dear Yuletide Author,

First of all, thank you so much for doing this! I'm sure that I'm going to love whatever you write. There's a lot of family stuff for me to do on Christmas Day (the price I pay for having my family scattered around the world - lots of Skyping) so if I don't comment on my story on the day, don't worry. I'm overwhelmed with Christmas and will be reading it on Boxing Day :-)

This year I surprised myself both in terms of the fandoms that I chose and the lack of femslash in my wishes. Usually there is at least one fandom where I would love some femslash. I briefly considered requesting Lady Sybil/Gwen in my Downton request, but 1) Gwen wasn't on the nomination list (oops!) and 2) I discovered that I really wanted to know more about Lady Edith.

My favourite fics involve a bit of good plot and some nice character insights or development. If you get that in the story then you're going to score big with me :-)

You want something more specific? OK, let me think...

Ballet Shoes )

Oxford Time Travellers )

Downton Abbey )

You can take these ideas or discard them entirely, it's your choice. The only things I'm really not into are PWP, death fic and non-con. Thank you so much, Yuletide Author, I think you're smashing :-)
selenay: (yuletide)
I have my Yuletide sign-up all worked out. I'll be entering it tomorrow. It's taken all week to put together 3 prompts.

It took me thirty minutes with the nominations results to find 15 fandoms that I felt confident about writing in. For the first time ever, I'll be putting in a bucket sign-up. I am undecided about whether this is progress or madness.

In other news, I have a ton of credit on my iTunes account and a big list of apps that I want to put on my iPad on Wednesday. I'm all about list making this week, it seems.

We should probably not discuss how many pretty games I appear to have listed. Let's instead focus on the fact that I've picked out a word processing app that apparently synchs well with Google Docs (QuickOffice Pro HD, for the interested) so I'll be able to write my Yuletide assignment(s)* wherever I may be.

* I may be seriously considering signing up as a pinch hitter. I know, I'm insane this year.

Yuletide!

I think LJ doesn't have my pretty Yuletide icon. Woe.

However, I have nominated for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. It's a tough decision. This year, due to the fact that I'm always the only person who signs up or shows interest, I've not nominated Holby City. It seems silly to waste a precious nomination slot on something where I'm the only person who nominates.

I can't remember how many requests we get to put in, but the three things that I've nominated are things that I'd definitely be happy to write in and where I'm familiar with the entire canon with the books at hand in my collection.

Now I just need to spend a couple of days working out what prompts I'll want. Pressure!

I love Yuletide :-)

In other news, I made granola today. Previously Mum has been the granola maker, but today I had a good and it looks delicious. Also, I made chocolate cheesecake and will be sampling it later. My kitchen skills are apparently growing :-)

To I have to go to work tomorrow? Why do I keep going back there? I want to sleeeeeeeep!
selenay: (books 1)
So, yesterday I had a really bad day because I had very little sleep the night before thanks to my stupid back. I was mostly competent at work but rather fell to pieces when I got home and went straight for a nice lie down with a book that turned into a nice nap.

Then Mum had to wake me up from that nap. Remember the episodes of West Wing where someone has to wake the President and they don't want to because he'll be very grumpy?

That's me when woken from naps. Grumpy. Uncooperative. Horrible. Poor Mum.

Today I'm feeling better thanks to the application of drugs last night. I've moved the bottle of co-codamol to beside my bed rather than in the kitchen to make it easier to dose myself the moment I get woken by my back rather than trying to keep sleeping and then waking up every few minutes the way I did the other night. Argh.

In less grumpy news...

I bought a new coat. I've got a lovely warm coat that goes down to my knees and is terrific when I'm out in the freezing weather or shovelling or trying to walk in a snow storm. It's got a big hood, deep pockets and it's big enough to fit a thick sweater under.

It's also deeply ugly and makes me look scruffier than a very scruffy thing.

New coat is not quite so warm, so won't be suitable for storms or shovelling, but it's got a furry collar and it looks very nice so I won't be embarrassed to turn up at work functions, dinners out or off-site meetings in it. Yay! It's long, beige and sort of trench-coat like with a belt. But stylish. I'm very pleased. There's enough room to layer up under it (damn, I'm getting thin - the medium had tons of room!) so I shouldn't be frozen and I feel much more confident in it :-)

Also, my iPad was despatched yesterday. Wooooo!

Finally, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide nominations open this week. Keep an eye out! Nominate! Join in! Get a lovely ficcy Christmas present! It may be my favourite ficathon of the year and I'm impatient to get started :-D

I've decided that the best way to fix leap years so they don't break code is for us all to get off the planet and push. Speed it up.

No?

I suppose there are a few technical difficulties with that plan...

It's Friday! It's nearly the weekend! I am filled with delicious croissant!

There needs to be some serious sleep happening over the weekend. Sadly, I think that's a bit unlikely. It's going to be a busy one and I need to find time for watching rugby and Doctor Who. And Spooks.

There needs to be an extra day in my weekend.

Thank goodness my vacation is coming up in two weeks and I'm allowed to not do the community thing and sub another, way shorter event that I did in my review. I need it :-)

If anyone has missed the fandom pimp post on [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, please head on over! I think that I'll try to pimp out Holby to see if there's any interest before I nom it in the survey. I really want Holby fic, but after three consecutive years of being the only person signing up for it (reading or writing), I suspect that it's such a tiny minority fandom that nobody will ever sign up.

Woe is me and all that.

Every time I see a news report about fracking (a mining technique, apparently) my mind does not go to the right place. BSG has warped me.

And now I must go to my meeting about the testing on Project Doom to explain why my report cannot display data for things that are not there and possibly explain the difference between revenue and claims to the tester.

*flails*

It took me an hour (due to editing twice, once for a forgotten shout out to my beta in notes and once due to not formatting some italics) but I have posted my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic.

This is mainly because the archive will be insane tomorrow (worse than today, if that's believable) and I don't want to panic about not being able to post before the deadline. It's editable so if my beta comes back with big red scrawls over the second draft that I sent, I can still correct and amend, but at least it's there and I feel fairly happy with it.

Also, if the physio kills me tomorrow it's also there.

I have got physio for 8am. As physio at 8am on Friday was a disaster due to me being incredibly stiff and immovable, I'm thinking that tomorrow may also be a Bit Of An Issue.

Note to self: book physio for afternoons in future when the morning stiffness has decreased and you're 'just' suffering from too much sitting down.

Today my back woke me up at 4am (after not going to sleep until after midnight) to inform me that we were done with lying down now. I was stubborn and stayed in bed, propped into semi-less-uncomfortable positions with pillows. It wasn't a good morning and I am so incredibly tired right now.
selenay: (yuletide)
So, the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignments came out yesterday. Woo!

I wasn't too sure about it yesterday, but now I'm really happy. I know the source (although may have a re-read, just for, er, accuracy?) and the requester has given me a really wide remit. That was what had me all "WTF?" yesterday about it. Thankfully a night of rest and thinking has produced a solid idea and the wide remit is looking wonderful.

Also, I may have spotted a prompt that I'll be doing for Madness. Heh.

I've got a little over 500 words on the Yuletide story (I may be deleting a bit of that and re-writing) and around 400 words on the Madness story. Right now, it looks like it's going to go well!

Remind me that I said that in around 3 weeks when it's all going horridly wrong, OK?
selenay: (yuletide)
Dear Yuletide Writer,

I am not hard to please. If you write something in either of my three requested fandoms, I shall probably be over the moon. The only things that I really don't enjoy are tragic endings, deaths of favourite characters and the squicky things like rape.

My big love is stories with plot and drama that also have some nice character development. I understand that not everyone likes writing meaty stories like that, though, so a nice fluffy vignette would make me equally happy. A writer who is writing what they enjoy tends to produce better stuff that a writer forcing themselves to write way outside their normal parameters.

If you want some better, more specific guidelines, here you go:

Holby City, Nina's Heavenly Delights, Bend It Like Beckham )

Wow, I really got rambly on Holby there. Can you tell that I'm lamenting the severe lack of Holby City fic?
selenay: (Ancient City)
I did it. I've signed up for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. Go me!

There will be a Dear Yuletide Writer soon. Promise.

I must say, I like the new form. It's a little slower than the old one, possibly, but gives much more in the way of options. The idea that additional things (like whether you're willing to write slash and what ratings you're happy with) can help a bit in the ranking for match is also quite nice.

I'm looking forward to seeing what I get matched to. I've been careful this year about only volunteering for things that I'm familiar with and can definitely get at the source for to fact check and get a feel for things. What are the odds that I'll still end up with an assignment that I struggle with?

As I felt confident last year that my sign-up had been canny, I'm not going to comment until I've got my assignment! It should be fun :-)
selenay: (Christmas Doctor Who 1)
So, yesterday Mum and I made our Arctic trek down to the shops half a mile away for milk. It took us a long time because the sidewalks were so dreadful.

We got home and were discussing the fact that we'd need to do some shopping before Christmas. Dad asked whether we *really* had to and we started listing all the things we'd run out of. As a lot of them were things that Dad likes to eat, he concluded that we needed to go shopping RIGHT NOW OMG. Before the roads freeze, or something.

Mum and I had planned to go today, but as he was actually volunteering to drive somewhere we decided to take advantage.

Um. Scariest. Drive. Ever.

There was a car ahead of us where the occupants were obviously taking pictures. They would stop every now and again to take photos. They stopped just around corners so that we could not see they were stopped until we were almost on them (not the kind of roads you want to do emergency stops on). They stopped at the top of a small rise so that we had to stop on the rise. Our wheels spun for a moment as we attempted to pull away. Yikes.

It was pretty, but not the weather for that kind of stuff. The store was packed and we saw a couple of people collecting deliveries that the store had obviously managed to pack but couldn't get anywhere. Mum decided that she was glad that she hadn't tried for a delivery! We got everything in record time, packed up the car and then proceeded home. Slightly less scary (due to lack of photographers) but still not an experience to be repeated regularly.

We spent the rest of the evening at home, recovering while watching trashy TV and drinking tea. Today has largely been about relaxation as well. A cafe has opened in what used to be one of the banks in my village so Mum and I decided to walk up there this morning to buy a paper at the newsagent (I've missed The Independent and Private Eye) and get some coffee at the cafe. Then we started working on Christmas lunch: the stuffing is ready and the spiced ham just finished baking. Yummy.

Now I think that I'll curl up with knitting and Spooks for the evening. It's Christmas Eve tomorrow!

And I crazy to be looking at Yuletide Madness to see whether anything inspires me?
selenay: (writing)
I have one paragraph of my Yuletide fic. I'm reasonably sure this isn't enough.

I have been hit with both a lot of socialising and a sense of ennui about blogging all of it. I'm not quite sure what has happened to me. Hopefully I'll be back to normal soon.

It's a little over two weeks until I fly to England for Christmas. This fact hasn't really hit me properly yet. I'm sure that I'm supposed to be making lists or something now.

Annie spent half an hour trying to find a comfy way to perch herself across my hands so that I couldn't type, getting shifted back to the sofa every time she got to invasive. She's now curled up against my leg, warm and snuggly, with her ears twitching to tell me that she's not really asleep. I should really get some writing done while she's not in the way.

But I want to read "The Killings at Badger's Drift" and that won't get me a Yuletide fic.

Seriously, someone needs to crack a whip and force me to write. Perhaps I should set a goal. 500 words minimum before I'm allowed to goof off and watch House. That's doable, right?
selenay: (reader)
Dear Santa,

For this year's Yuletide I found that I knew which fandoms I wanted some fic in, even which characters, but got a bit stuck on the actual prompts. This is why most of my prompts are fairly bare. All I really want for Christmas is some good, plotty fic that explores my beloved characters a bit. And plotty does not mean that I want a 32,000 word adventure: it means that I want something to happen in the fic and there to be some kind of reaction and learning from the characters. Really, I'm just trying to say that I'm not the kind of person who loves a "xx and yy go buying shoes!" kind of thing.

That said, I can probably provide some more info on my fandoms and why I love them and want more from them, although I'd really just like you to write something you enjoy and feel proud of at the end. So you can ignore my prompts entirely if you need to. But please, no death fic and no extreme violence/tragedy or non/dub-con, kthx. Those are the things I deliberately avoid in fic.

Cut for length and irrelevance to 90% of my f-list )
selenay: (writing)
I thought long and hard and got my Yuletide sign-up today while I waited for some files to copy over to my shiny new toy. Yay!

It was actually easier to think of things I could offer than request. I knew which fandoms I wanted to request, but actual prompts were hard to think of. I tried to offer for fandoms with low offer take-ups and that I knew the source well. I don't have immediate access to the final two seasons of Press Gang, but can get access, and the other things that I offered are fandoms that I definitely have access to.

Now to see what I get! I'm kind of hoping for a particular fandom, where only two people (including me) have offered/requested but I'll be quite happy with whichever one I get. My Santa note will go up in a couple of days.

Supper is in the slow cooker (mmm, ribs...) and now I'm just waiting for files to copy over to my new drive before I make some lunch and talk to the parents. Should be quite a nice, relaxed Sunday.

Did I mention that I have 150 words of the Doctor and Donna having a Christmas adventure?

Only one week until new Doctor Who!

Yuletide sign ups are open: http://www.yuletidetreasure.org/signup_page1.cgi

Eep! It's going to be a really tough choice this year. Made even worse by the fact that B5 is eligible this year. At first I was "WTF?" about that, until I remembered how frustrated I've been about the fact that I found the Internet too late to join in the B5 ficcing. Most of the websites that hosted B5 fic have gone, there is only a smattering on the big archives, and very little new stuff is coming out. So, er, B5 actually does qualify as a rare fandom now.

*sigh*

I've only got four request slots available and, including B5, seven that I'd love to request. So I need to sit down and think carefully, not just about which fandoms I want fic from but also what fandoms I can think of good prompts for. Last year I got really luck with two lovely Bend It Like Beckham Jess/Jules stories (after three years of not getting BILB at all even in femslash challenges) but I'm greedy and want more. Then again, there's Press Gang. And my beloved Holby City. And Chalet School. And Casualty 1909 is already up as requested/offered, so there's a possibility. And Young Wizards seems to get some lovely stuff written.

The thing that's not going to be as difficult this year, I think, is working out what I can offer. I made notes of which fandoms I was considering at nomination stage and even in the ones that I didn't nom, there are several that I feel I can offer. I'm trying to make sure that this year I only offer for things that I have easy access to source material for :-) So that I don't get asked to write fic for one of the Chalet Schools that I don't have...

I think that I need to have a good, long think about this and do my sign up at the weekend.

Now, is there any kind of Doctor Who Santa type thing out there? After all, two deadlines is better than one. Um.
