Back in England
Oct. 23rd, 2006 02:18 pmUrf. I'm back. Flight was fine and the house feels very empty. Work is better than expected considering how long I was away (and the number of emails to contend with!), but rather depressing after two weeks of holiday.
And I'm missing my aunt and Canada dreadfully.
After unpacking, shopping, washing clothes and having a nap yesterday, I watched the first three episodes of Robin Hood. It's very daft, overblown and silly. I'm liking it very much :-)
I was also able to watch Torchwood last night to which my only current thought it SQUEE! Hopefully more coherent thoughts will be appearing later.
Feel free to spoil (but not next week's episodes) in the comments - readers beware.

Date: 2006-10-23 02:31 pm (UTC)I liked episode 2 of Torchwood better than 1, but that's because 1 was busy introducing everything and everything. And the Doctor Who bits felt kind of shoehorned in. It's a bit weird that we know a whole lot more about Jack than any of the characters do. And he seems to be Captain Jack (Harkness) in the same way that Captain Jack (Sparrow) is, without anything to be captain of.
I kind of want it to be UNIT, cos they're doing the same sort of things, as in dealing with alien threats. But without the Doctor or the Brigadier and the addition of getting hold of the technology to use.
I did feel that all the sex in the second episode was a bit gratuitous - like they'd put it in just because they can do it in Torchwood and not in Doctor Who. And by the end I felt sorry for the alien just as much as for the girl. I know it was bad and it had killed lots of people but they callously killed it without batting an eyelid - even Gwen who complains the others aren't human and don't care.
I've seen people complain that Gwen hasn't carried a gun, but as she said, she walked the beat, so d'uh!

Date: 2006-10-24 08:18 pm (UTC)I think watching the first three episodes as a marathon while still dopey from flying helped :-) But I did enjoyed it because it's fairly daft but fun.

Same here, and I think for the same reasons.
Doctor Who bits felt kind of shoehorned in
Hmm, it didn't to me. But I was half expecting there to be more overt references so the ones that were in there felt more natural than I'd expected.
without anything to be captain of.
But could he be anything but Captain Jack? And in my mind, it's because he was a Time Agent. He just hasn't got used to not being a Captain :-)
all the sex in the second episode was a bit gratuitous
It probably was and I think it was put in for the reasons that you said above. I read a review where someone was comparing these two episodes with Angel - and the reasoning behind the way it was done - and I think there is a point. They needed to state very early on that this is definitely not Doctor Who, that we shouldn't expect Doctor Who and need to mentally change gears for this. In that sense, it worked well.
I enjoyed the episode (and find it rather irritating that concerned parents are complaining after letting their young children watch it...) a lot, but I'm going to be really interested by what the trailers showed for next week's episode.
I felt sorry for the alien
I didn't. It stated that it liked the orgasmic energy best, which I took as saying that it could feed on other energy and just got greedy. Possibly addicted, but in the end it wasn't a survival thing, it was a choice thing. So I had no problems with the callous killing thing :-)
she walked the beat, so d'uh!
Exactly! Although some of my Canadian relatives were amazed to learn that our police don't carry guns as standard, so if any of those complainers are American then they can be excused :-)

Date: 2006-10-24 08:55 pm (UTC)Well, yes, and it wouldn't be the same if he wasn't, but technically speaking, he isn't really as far as the 21st century is concerned.
and find it rather irritating that concerned parents are complaining after letting their young children watch it.
They only have themselves to blame for letting them watch something after the watershed. That's what it's there for.
so if any of those complainers are American then they can be excused
They weren't, which was what got me.

Date: 2006-10-25 09:33 am (UTC)*g* Maybe nobody has questioned yet exactly what he's a Captain of and he doesn't want to give up the title?
That's what it's there for.
Indeed. Parents apparently don't use this kind of logic, though, when it comes to kids. They saw the words Doctor Who and ignored all other indicators.
They weren't, which was what got me.
Hmm, that is weird. They're obviously way too used to American cop shows to have noticed the way our bobbies act.
