I can’t believe my last real update was in June. What happened?

Well, a lot. VidUKon was brilliant fun. In August I went to Dublin for Worldcon, which was also excellent fun.

And then in September I did the scary thing and talked to a mortgage broker, who told me the banks would definitely like me to have some money. And thus, in October I put in an offer on a house that was accepted! We exchanged contracts in early December and the sale completes on January 6th. The movers are booked for January 20th.

That little paragraph sounds so easy, but as anyone who has bought a house will know, it’s not been quite that easy (although I’m told I’ve had a really easy time of it so far). There were so many forms to fill in, papers to find, people to talk to, and procedures to follow. I’ve got a few more weeks of stuff to do as I move, sort out utilities and so forth, and generally set up a home.

But I’m really happy that it’s happening and I’m going to have a home of my own. It’s a three-bedroom end of terrace house, on the estate I grew up on only a couple of minutes walk from my parents’ house. So it has the advantage of me knowing the area really well and being familiar with both the good and bad points to it. I’ll be within easy walking distance of my doctor, library, shops, dentist, vet, several bus lines, and a couple of nice coffee shops. I’m in between two train lines going into London. I’ll be enjoying the kind of village life I’m used to and (hopefully) continuing to live a car-free life.

Living so close to my parents also has its pluses and minuses. Mum and I are setting up firm rules and boundaries for all of us, to make sure the pluses outweigh the minuses ;-)

The process has been scary at times and I’ve had to talk myself down from a few panics, but I keep reminding myself that it’s all going to be worth it in the end. My own home, not rented from anyone, where I can be secure and stable and make my own choices about everything. And not have to think about moving for a long time :D

So, 2019 has been rather busy and filled with changes, but hopefully 2020 is going to be focused on more on settling in and putting down real roots at last.

You never know, I might write more than three fanfics next year!

Aw, well done! House buying/moving is certainly a thing that eats up time and energy, so good luck with the last stages of it - and may it free you up to settle down and enjoy 2020. Fic and being here would be lovely too, but whatever comes. ♥

Hooray! My brother recently bought a place in the UK so I think UK house buying is even worse than anywhere else! So well done surviving the process!

Happy New Year
