SJA: The Nightmare Man
Nov. 1st, 2010 06:10 pmOnly a week three weeks behind (that's what happens when one goes on vacation) but here we go.
I wonder how many children refused to go to sleep that week? That was actually quite scary! The entire idea of a creature that feeds on nightmares and traps people in them so that he can continue feeding is completely creepy. Nightmares are terrifying enough for most of us, I can only imagine how bad they'd be for a boy who had never dreamed before.
I've managed to stay fairly spoiler-free, so I had no idea that Luke was leaving. I was quite sad at all the goodbyes at the end, even though I loved the way that he left and loved that they found a reason that makes sense. After all, if he's a super genius then why would he be kept back, doing A-levels etc. at the same rate as other kids.
It was good to see the way that the Nightmare Man tied into Luke's story - I know, I know, totally deliberate - because it felt more 'whole' that Maria's last episode. Defeating the monster through the power of friendship was slightly hokey, but beautifully played and probably at just the right level for the intended audience.
Sometimes I forget that SJA is a children's show because it's so good.
Hopefully we'll get Luke back for occasional bits and pieces. They've had Maria pop up and she's frequently referenced, so I know they won't forget about Luke. I'm spoiler-free so I have no idea whether they're bringing in someone new or sticking with SJA, Clyde and Rani now. My initial thought was that I don't want a replacement, but if they bring in a new character and do it well then I probably won't mind.
At least we've got rid of K-9. He's a great idea in theory, but he does slow down some of the action at times with his inability to go anywhere fast, travel on uneven surfaces or hop even the tiniest of steps. Thirty years of innovation and progress never fixed that!
The next episode looks exciting. I'm very happy to have SJA back :-)
