I will be reviewing this on the website later in the month, but everyone needs to read A Lapse of Gravity by [livejournal.com profile] astolat. It's shallot (in case anyone is wondering), a very good fanfic writer who has written distressingly few SG fics, damn her. This one is shiny, new and convinced me of a pairing combination that I normally try not to see. Plus her writing style is just beautiful and I will be rushing out to buy her novel when it's out (some time next year).

Yesterday was much fun, if rather exhausting. It was the geek's way of celebrating the end of exams - lunch followed by an afternoon in the Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford. I made many notes, drew little diagrams of a few things, took some photos and found some wonderful kit for my assassin character in Mage Murders.

Today has been lazy. I haven't even managed to write anything. Damn. I did watch the first ep of a BBC series on family histories and got fired up for yet another project when I finish my degree - tracking down my father's family. He remembers very little about his childhood, his father died when Da was very young and my grandmother wouldn't talk about it. She died a couple of years ago, our last link to that generation. Mom and I want to find out who these people were and where they came from. I think it's particularly frustrating for us because Mom's family is so into knowing your roots and tracing the family tree - they're Canadian and they can trace back to the first landings in America in the 17th century, through the War of Independence and the settling in Canada and into modern days. I have a huge Canadian family and I love hearing all the old family stories. Da's family is tiny and nobody knows much. There are no family stories and that's sad for me.

I can tell that I'm going to get completely addicted to the search :-)

I've also been reading [livejournal.com profile] minkboylove's tales of Sims 2 and I *so* want to get it. From experience with the original game, I'll go through periods of severe addiction where I stay up all night and abandon important projects, which is the major reason that I'm not indulging myself yet. Got too many things to do. Damn! It sounds like so much fun, even better than the original. Guh.

Possibly this may be down to a desire to create Jacks and Daniels and get them to discover Woo Hoo, though, and that would be Bad. Bad Sel.

My mum's into researching family history. She's even taught courses on it. She's probably got loads of info on where to start, if you want. It can be a nice expensive hobby though - she has hundreds of CDs. And I am not exagerating.

It is very interesting though - specially when you find an old family scandal . My mum's family were (nearly) all poor, and I'm very, very distantly related to the royal family on my dad's side.

I like the sound of that money-related scandal, it does sound exciting!

My mum's probably gots loads of info stashed away somewhere about researching your family tree. There are some links on her web site at http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/town/way/po28/genealogy/index.htm, along with bits of her family tree.

Wow, I don't think we managed scandals quite that big! Definitely something you need to look into :)
