Lazy Sunday
Oct. 17th, 2004 08:03 pmI will be reviewing this on the website later in the month, but everyone needs to read A Lapse of Gravity by
astolat. It's shallot (in case anyone is wondering), a very good fanfic writer who has written distressingly few SG fics, damn her. This one is shiny, new and convinced me of a pairing combination that I normally try not to see. Plus her writing style is just beautiful and I will be rushing out to buy her novel when it's out (some time next year).
Yesterday was much fun, if rather exhausting. It was the geek's way of celebrating the end of exams - lunch followed by an afternoon in the Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford. I made many notes, drew little diagrams of a few things, took some photos and found some wonderful kit for my assassin character in Mage Murders.
Today has been lazy. I haven't even managed to write anything. Damn. I did watch the first ep of a BBC series on family histories and got fired up for yet another project when I finish my degree - tracking down my father's family. He remembers very little about his childhood, his father died when Da was very young and my grandmother wouldn't talk about it. She died a couple of years ago, our last link to that generation. Mom and I want to find out who these people were and where they came from. I think it's particularly frustrating for us because Mom's family is so into knowing your roots and tracing the family tree - they're Canadian and they can trace back to the first landings in America in the 17th century, through the War of Independence and the settling in Canada and into modern days. I have a huge Canadian family and I love hearing all the old family stories. Da's family is tiny and nobody knows much. There are no family stories and that's sad for me.
I can tell that I'm going to get completely addicted to the search :-)
I've also been reading
minkboylove's tales of Sims 2 and I *so* want to get it. From experience with the original game, I'll go through periods of severe addiction where I stay up all night and abandon important projects, which is the major reason that I'm not indulging myself yet. Got too many things to do. Damn! It sounds like so much fun, even better than the original. Guh.
Possibly this may be down to a desire to create Jacks and Daniels and get them to discover Woo Hoo, though, and that would be Bad. Bad Sel.

Date: 2004-10-17 10:46 pm (UTC)It is very interesting though - specially when you find an old family scandal . My mum's family were (nearly) all poor, and I'm very, very distantly related to the royal family on my dad's side.

Date: 2004-10-18 11:07 am (UTC)We do know that my gradnmother's family had money at one point (enough that my great aunt had a big social coming out party, complete with white gown and hundreds of guests), but we also know that the money got lost somewhere and there was some kind of scandal. That will be interesting to find :-) We'd also like to track my Mom's mother - there's a family story that one of her ancestors signed the Magna Carta, which would be cool. Finding out where Da came from and what his family were would be fascinating, though. He's got this big blank spot with nothing to tell and nothing to remember and we want to fill in the gap.

Date: 2004-10-18 06:40 pm (UTC)My mum's probably gots loads of info stashed away somewhere about researching your family tree. There are some links on her web site at http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/town/way/po28/genealogy/index.htm, along with bits of her family tree.

Date: 2004-10-19 08:59 am (UTC)The money-related scandal does sound interesting :-) It could turn out to be something perfectly boring, but I have a feeling that it won't be. After all, the money loss seems to have been practically overnight, implying that it was sudden and probably rather scandalous, possibly even making it into the papers! Woo!
