Bad day at the office...
Apr. 3rd, 2006 09:51 amI'm here and it's Monday morning. Of course, because I want to get through a good chunk of work before my back gives out, our systems are having some major issues and causing massive delays. Hmmm. The main culprit is the data warehouse, which keeps disconnecting us at random intervals preventing our reports running. We then have to start the report all over again from the beginning. Only to get disconnected yet again.
Grrrr.
End result is that, despite being in at 7.30am, I'm actually behind on where I'd usually be at this time on a Monday. Looks like my hopes of getting out early are destined to be foiled. Why can't my company make it easy for us to work from home?
In other news, crippled Da is slowly coming around to the idea that his broken ankle may need more than a week to heal. Poor petal. He was very happy with all the steam train footage that Mom and I managed to garner.
And I'm thoroughly enjoying
naominovik's Temeraire. The only slight issue is that it's a hardback so I can't cart it into work with me. My lunchtime reading is instead a thoroughly pulpy looking fantasy that I bought during this weekend's bookshop raid. Not that I'll probably have time for lunch today, but it will be a good, distracting read if I do get ten minutes :-)
Grrrr.

Date: 2006-04-03 11:55 am (UTC)If you send me your address, and I get myself some A4 envelopes, I'll copy that CD and post you the Doctor Who magazine. At least that'll be something for your dad to read.

Date: 2006-04-03 02:04 pm (UTC)Tomorrow is going to be absolute hell trying to catch up with this stuff. The meeting that I'm supposed to have some of this stuff ready for this afternoon is now not going to happen due to this. Bleh.
Sorry about the whining. I'm feel grouchy :-(
I'll email you my address when I get home. I may even let Da have first dibs on reading. He's looking a little miserable, although he perked up when we saw the new series trailer last night :-)

Date: 2006-04-03 02:54 pm (UTC)My day's not going too badly now. I thought I had a project due today, but it turns out to be tomorrow, so I've been getting lots of other things done, that haven't taken as long as I thought they might.
Tomorrow could still end up quite busy though.
I will actually write your address in my diary this time, so I won't lose it. The new series trailer does look very exciting. Did you know as part of their 1973 week BBC4 are showing a 1973 episode tonight at 7.10 (and also tomorrow and the day after)?

Date: 2006-04-03 08:07 pm (UTC)The new series trailer looks really good - I'm started to get rather excited about it :-) Is it The Green Death that BBC4 are showing? It's rather a good one if you can catch it :-) Da recorded the re-showing of the first episode of Life on Mars last night because he missed it. I think my attempted summary worked OK for him to understand the rest of the series, but he's looking forward to actually seeing it. I think that he enjoyed the series as much as we did :-)

Date: 2006-04-03 08:18 pm (UTC)I was tempted to re-watch Life on Mars last night, but I was already taping Poirot and watching Auf Wiedersehen Pet on Men & Motors, and I only have the one Freeview card :)

Date: 2006-04-03 08:25 pm (UTC)Jo was never one of the Doctor's smarter companions, but I think she made a great foil for Jon Pertwee. I've always liked his Doctor although I can never quite work out why. I prefered him over Tom Baker - possibly I like the eccentricty and dashing action man side, while Tom Baker's Doctor was a little too far to the eccentric side. Hmm. But Jo and Jon Pertwee's Doctor do make a good combination.
I only have the one Freeview card :)
Ah, the hardships of modern life :-)

Date: 2006-04-06 07:45 pm (UTC)And his Doctor had great relationships with his companions - I've only seen a couple of episodes with Liz Shaw and I liked her a lot. She was very much his equal, something that he's rarely had in any of his companions, so that was a really great relationship. They'd have geek out moments together :-) I think that's where a lot of the humour came from in his relationship with Jo - he went from Liz, doctorate and genius, to Jo, who didn't quite pass A-level science. It made a for a big contrast and I think that's where a lot of his fatherly portrayal came from.
I need to get hold of some more of Jon Pertwee's adventures. Sadly, he died before Big Finish started doing their recordings :-(

Date: 2006-04-08 03:05 pm (UTC)I didn't know that. I do like his Doctor - although I've not seen any so far that I didn't like.
I was going to say I've not seen any Liz Shaw episodes, except I came across an episode guide and discovered I had. She obviously made a big impression :)
I got round to watching the end of The Green Death last night. I knew Jo was going to leave at the end, but it was still so sad.

*snort* They wrote Liz out because they felt there weren't any characters that the viewer could relate to. Liz and the Doctor could geek out over cool stuff as fellow scientists, but Liz couldn't do the "explain it simply for the viewer" stuff or the "ask really dumb questions" stuff. So they replaced her with Jo ;-)
I knew Jo was going to leave at the end, but it was still so sad.
I know :-( I think The Green Death was only the second Jo story that I'd seen so it was really sad to see her go so 'quickly', from my perspective. I've seen several of her stories since, including her first one (really wish I could remember the title...), but it's still quite sad to see her leave.

Date: 2006-04-10 06:41 pm (UTC)The annoying thing about the BBC having shown that one episode is that I really want to see more of Jon Pertwee's doctor. I really liked him in the three episodes I've seen.
