I booted up the old laptop today. OMG, that thing is so slow!

However, I managed to uninstall McAfee and install AVG on it so I can now transfer the license for the McAfee over to this machine. I'm getting there with this stuff...

I also got Vuze set up for better, easier torrenting. It's downloading and seeding fine, but the status bar says that it's firewalled despite being actively seeding back. Argh. Apparently this may be a NAT thing but I've got no clue *sigh*

Last night I watched Voyage of the Dawn Treader on Netflix. So good! Loved it totally. It was nice to see Lucy and Edmund growing up and I thought the kid playing Eustace pitched it just right.

Netflix suddenly has a lot of good films on. I've got Hellboy queued up to watch when Mum is gone and I keep spotting things that I need to watch or re-watch.

OK, my productivity was only in the context of things that I have sorted out on my computer. I've been for a nice walk and that's the only practical thing that I've done. But it's been a nice weekend :-)

Squeee!

I've just pushed the order button on my iPad :-DDD

I've saved well, so I had the money to go rather top of the range: 64GB with 3G.

In addition, I've got a blue Smart Cover, the extra (longer) charging cable and a wireless keyboard. Plus, obviously, AppleCare just in case.

Over on another website, I've ordered a pale blue sleeve to keep it in.

So excited!

It will arrive next week, but Mum is under instructions to keep it hidden until my birthday as it's my present to myself this year.

There may have been some playing with iPads at Best Buy yesterday to confirm which one I wanted :-) And to get a good look at things like the comic app on a nice big screen. And stuff. I'm insanely excited about this :-D

The next eighteen days are going to be torture for everyone around me.

Despite DHL's best attempts and total inefficiency, I now have a Popcorn Hour media thingy and thus can watch Holby and stuff without needing to plug the laptop into the TV. It is a thing of awesomesauce.

Note: no, it's not just Holby. Although that is my current terrible addiction. I'd been cutting back a lot because my laptop is getting old and I worried about running it too much for videos (plus my silly cat plays chase the cursor a lot) so now I can go back to my old ways and watch all the things that I'm interested in.

Mum flew to Manitoba today for a couple of weeks. She left before I got up, which confused the heck out of the cats, and I'm so glad that my cousin took her because I had a god-awful headache when I woke up. Argh, weather, I kind of hate you and your headache/migraine inducing ways.

Now I just have to plan all the awesome things that I will eat while she is gone. Wheee!

Also, I may be eating supper in front of the telly box rather a lot. There is Netflix. There is 'acquired' stuff. And eating while watching TV slows down the rate that I eat so that I don't end up with nasty tummy aches.

I guess it's time to hit my Delicious bookmark stash and figure out what I want to make next week...

So, er, that new Doctor Who trailer looks rather swish. And exciting. Now I'm impatient :-)

Cut for moaning about weather )

Anyway, not the weekend we planned and I don't feel very rested (I want to have some sleep!) but I don't feel too bad today and the next weekend is a long one thanks to a provincial holiday. Woo!

The Tour ended over the weekend and was absolutely excellent. Definitely one of the best recent Tours :-)

That means I don't have Tour watching to do this week. My evenings suddenly look very weird and a bit empty. Tonight I may celebrate by spending the entire evening curled up with a book. That will be after Mum and I have had a nice walk on the beach :-)

I sort of quietly hate today because there is a perfect storm of 'stuff' happening at work and I'm feeling a wee bit harassed and overwhelmed. Why do people want answers on things on the one day that the person qualified to give answers is out? And why do I have to make decisions in their place? *whine whine whine*

Cut for gadget talk )

I really need a vacation. I've tentatively booked a week in October. It's dependent completely on whether my father can resist the temptation to work throughout his visit here (in October) and how much of a miserable bastard he'll be if Mum and I go out to do fun stuff when I ends up working. I'm fully prepared to move it to November if he decides to do his usual because I want to enjoy my vacation, not tread on egg-shells because he's a workaholic who resents us for abandoning him to his work. Bitter? Me? Never!

Ugh, it's a grey, horribly muggy day and I dragged myself into work despite a bad headache just so that I could have air-conditioning. I suspect that the headache (which started on Wednesday, double ugh) is due to the barometer and unfortunately last night's massive thunderstorm seems to have made things worse rather than better.

Can we please have some warm, clear days now? I'm done with oppressive and muggy. My poor head will thank you.

After work tonight, I am taking Mum out to test-drive some Kobos. I like playing with toys :-D

Also, I now have the money saved for an iPad but I'm holding out until my birthday later this year. That way it will come pre-installed with iOS5 and I won't feel guilty for spending money on new gadgets. It's a birthday present! To me!

Cut for geeky rambles )

Ack, this is not something that I need to think about yet. Quit worrying at it, brain.

I'm worrying at everything right now. My brain won't turn off. It's very annoying. I'm pretty sure that a large part of it is the prednisone (I seem to get more anxious the higher my dose) and perhaps the reaction from being ill for so long with several set-backs, but it's really frustrating. I'd just like to relax a bit and stop worrying about everything around me!

Ugh. Maybe I should look into getting a massage or something, work some of the tension out of my shoulders and neck and then I might not feel so tense all the time and it will magically communicate to my brain that we don't need to be hyper-alert worried 24/7.

Anyway, it's the weekend and I intend to relax a bit, read a bit and generally enjoy myself without rushing around. I may even spare an hour to sort through some paperwork tomorrow so that I can feel slightly useful as well.

Mostly, I just want to nap and read. Although there is the final part of the Tour to watch and the race has been incredibly exciting, so some of my time may be spend in front of the TV. Oh, my life is so hard sometimes :-D

So, I think that I may be setting up a plan to very, very gradually save towards buying an iPad. Yup, I'm becoming *that* geek. I'm figuring on early next year for the actual purchase, by which time the iPad 3 will be out with whatever nice extras it's going to have. So that gives me around a year to put a little bit aside each month.

It may be sooner if the global BBC iPlayer comes to Canada before the end of the year :-) That, for me, would be the killer app that would have me out buying an iPad immediately. Being able to watch BBC stuff from the comfort of my bed without worrying that my laptop is going to shout at me when I move it and upset the hard-drive? Yup, sounds good to me :-)

Mostly, I'm thinking that I want something with a decent (but not huge) screen that's very portable and will make it easy to keep up with things on the move and watch videos wherever I want. My iPod Touch is fab around the house and on short trips for keeping up with emails, Twitter and Facebook, but it's not practical for longer trips (like, say, two weeks in England next year) and definitely not good enough for some of the streaming video stuff that's now around. It was lovely to fly without my laptop and I've kind of decided that dragging a laptop around airports is just not for me anymore. Not when there are other, lighter options.

So, I'm going to save up for an iPad. I am turning into Gadget Girl.

I've also been thinking about off-site back-up, particularly now that Amazon has launched it's Cloud Drive service. My music is all ripped CDs (that I own), so if I lost the data it would be a pain but not the end of my life. What I really want to have a good back-up location for is my photos and my personal documents. I've thought about DropBox on and off but never quite got around to it. As I use Amazon for so many other things, I may look at testing the Cloud Drive and see what I think.

Today is "plan next week's menu" day. I think that it needs to include many noms. Sunday is going to be a repeat of the stunningly nommy salmon and garlic/rosemary roasted potatoes from last Sunday. I'm thinking that Monday may be chicken wings, possibly baked with a BBQ rub. It's been ages since I last had chicken wings. I may even go wild and do some potato wedges to go with them. Currently, I'm stuck on Saturday. Do I want to treat myself to some form of take-out? If so, what? Or do I want to see what my butcher has that is nom? Or do I want to try a new recipe?

Oh, the dilemma!

I'm leaning towards take-out. Possibly of the sushi variety. Or, if I start Humira on Saturday and I'm feeling achey, it may be pizza.

Toys!

My day out was lovely, although I did get home with a sore back (er, so nothing new there) and a bit of a headache. Feeling much better now due to the consumption of rather fine sushi. Yay.

But...

I have toys! I have a Western Digital My Passport 400GB hard drive that is tiny and beautiful. That will be played with extensively tomorrow.

I also have a teeny little optical mouse that attaches to the compy by USB and the little USB stick actually fits into the mouse when it's packed away. It is awesome. And it will make using my lappy so much easier. Shall no longer be knocking the cats off my lap each time I need to access another video file, for a start.

I love toys.

Also, Tubey has been bound off and the ends woven in. I tried it on and feel very happy with it. Best of all, I got to ceremonially add it to my sweater shelf. That's one of my favourite moments, when something turns from something I've been working on to something that's a part of my wardrobe. I'm planning to debut it at knit night :-D

And now for Strictly Come Dancing and a sock, I think.
selenay: (questions/comments)
I am considering investing a wireless Internet radio device. Or at least saving up to invest :-) This is largely so that I can listen to Radio 2 and Radio 4 around the house without needing to set up the laptop.

Can anyone recommend a particular brand/make/device? I want one that can pick up the Listen Again stuff as well as the live stream so that I can listen to the Today show in the mornings and the Radio 4 comedy stuff while I'm cooking supper, but that's my only real restriction. I can see a few models around but it would be nice to have a personal rec if possible.
