As promised, Brokeback Mountain was seen with T today and we both exited the cinema feeling that it was an excellent way to spend the afternoon. The film was very good - far better than I'd expected - and unless the Academy decides to be overly conservative, it should be picking up at least a couple of nominations this year. If nothing else, the cinematography and direction deserve something because it made beautiful use of the scenery and I felt that Ang Lee had caught the tone just right.

I've spend the last hour reading the short story that it was based on and he kept the movie remarkably faithful to it. Far more so, in fact, than most movie versions of books.

Even the complaints that I've seen about cutting of sex scenes didn't bother me because, as I said, I thought that Ang Lee had the tone just right. The film contained more than I thought that it would - absolutely no doubts left about the themes of the movie - and my feeling was that any more would have been for pure titillation rather than storytelling. Maybe that's what some were hoping for, but for me it was pitched just right.

The main message is: go and see this if you can 'cos it's worth it :-)

I am now going to spend the evening sitting around with snack products and medical dramas. Despite a bit of limping today, my hip and legs are feeling better than they have in a few days. Hopefully a bit of rest this weekend will see me back to normal next week :-)
