The Untamed episode 4
Aug. 3rd, 2020 05:30 pmI should find myself an Untamed icon or two for these. Hmm.
Okay, so WWX is a labrador puppy crossed with a chaos demon in human form, and he's going to be in detention writing lines forever. I love him.
And LWJ is going to be stuck watching over him writing lines forever, if he can ever get WWX into the library to actually write them. And this is where true love strikes, over detention. And LWJ despairs because he's a disciplined and serious Lan sect person, and he's fallen for the aforementioned labrador puppy crossed with a chaos demon.
hockeybosh asked me how I feel about the new Wens who were introduced in this episode. Going to go out on a limb and say that for the majority of Wens, if they're not outright evil then they're arrogant pricks who are awful. The exceptions being Wen Ning and Wen Qing. I already know Wen Ning turns into some kind of terrifying chain-wrapped spectre in sixteen years, which means I'm going to be distressed at some point because he's currently an odd but sweet person. WWX's habit of befriending everyone (except arrogant jerks) really shone through in the archery scene with him.
I'm curious about what Wen Qing is investigating, but I like her and I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.
Nie Huaisang is lovely. The best sort of side-kick and I can easily see him getting led into ridiculous scrapes by WWX.
Jiang Cheng is complicated. He's got a definite stick up the ass problem, but I think a lot of it is that he worries about the people around him and his reaction to that is to project priggish disapproval in a wave everywhere. I'm intrigued to find out how we go from this to what we see in the first two episodes.
I'm afraid my reaction to Meng Yao was "OMG, he has such a crush on Lan Xichen, it's adorable" and that is pretty much all I absorbed. HB helpfully explained his parentage and all I can say is wow, his father got around.
I continue to think Lan Xichen is lovely. And he gets to do magic with a giant recorder!
Seriously, there is music magic in this and I'm going to keep loving that. Huge fan of music magic concepts.
There were hints at plotty things here, but most of the focus was on introducing characters and setting up connections, which I'm quite happy with when so much of it is delightful. Except 80% of the Wens, they are not delightful. Kind of loved Lan Xichen's scorn on the incredibly arrogant one who interrupted the introductions and gift-giving.
It's nice to see several women characters who clearly have as much power and agency as the men. They get swords, they get to attend lectures, they get magic, they get plot. I wasn't expecting that, to be honest.
THey're setting me up to love all these characters so they can break my heart later, aren't they?
Only one episode last night, because HB and I were both way too tired to stay awake late. Look at us, making sensible decisions about this!
(It probably won't last.)
