Yuletide Letter
Dec. 25th, 2014 02:14 pmDear Yuletide Author,
You've signed up to write for one of my beloved teeny fandoms so that already makes me adore you and utter little squeaky happy noises :-D Thank you!
I'm not hard to please, I don't think. A lot of my fandoms are femslashy this year, but if F/F isn't your thing, I'm a huge fan of female friendships and fics focusing on those. Honestly, apart from one exception that will be pretty obvious, don't feel obligated to throw in femslash just to please me unless it's something you also feel for those characters. And if you do, then go to town on it :-D
General likes and loves
- Happy or hopeful endings. I'm a sucker for fics that leave me smiling and feeling good about life and my fandoms.
- Explorations of friendship and love. In all forms. Friends to lovers, epic friendship, epic love, quietly maturing love, slow builds, pining and its resolution, friends as found family...whether a relationship is romantic or not, I'm a big fan of relationships based in friendship.
- Tropes. I have an embarrassingly intense love for the tropes: all the AUs (really, ALL OF THEM), soulbonds, telepathy, amnesia, huddle for warmth, cabin fic, road trips, fake relationship, rivals to lovers...you can't go wrong with tropes for me.
- Or subverting the tropes, that will also get me happy, particularly if it's subverting some of the more problematic tropes (sex pollen subversion etc.)
- Any rating is great, but I do like some plot in my porn if that's your direction. PWPs don't do much for me unless it's the kind with lots of banter and affection and sex that doesn't go perfectly but is still good for everyone.
- Plotty goodness casefic is always a winner for me as well.
- Humour. Deep and dark fic is cool, but deep and funny or fluffy and funny or just some great bantery humour are more my level.
- If you're a romance writer and you're doing a slow build, I'm a complete sucker for the big gorgeously desperate kiss-after-revealing-shared-feelings trope. Go wild on that if you want to :-D
- Plotty goodness casefic with humour and kissing and porn is probably too much to ask for, but it's basically my ideal fic :-D
General dislikes
- Character death. Please, please, no. I really don't enjoy crying into my Christmas Pudding.
- Torture, graphic violence, rape, BDSM, gore, scat, watersports...nope.
- Last year I had a note here about my dislike for shopping fics, unless the fic is about fighting off aliens in IKEA using standard lamps and Billy bookcases. As my writer WROTE THAT FIC, I can't actually make that note again :-D
Cornetto "40-love" Commercial:Debbie, Maria
I watched this earlier in the year and adored it to pieces. It was the femslashy tennis Au of my heart, and someone made it. They put it on screen. How awesome was that? You can find the source here: Cornetto 40-Love Commercial.
When I saw it as a Yuletide fandom, I squeed. I loved the short film, but I wanted more. I wanted all the moments they couldn't fit into the commercial. I could have watched a two hour film of this, no lie.
Debbie and Maria's story is incredibly sweet, and I fell for them so easily. Their story is largely told through Debbie's POV, yet despite that, we don't learn much about Debbie's life outside tennis. Just that she commutes a lot and is a little shy, but doesn't let that hold her back from helping someone who needs it or confronting someone when she's hurt.
Maria's life outside her interactions with Debbie are even more of a mystery. She's lonely and isolated, due to her talent and her looks, and she has a demanding coach who doesn't seem to like distractions. I'd love something about what she's doing and thinking during the film. What happened after she left with Debbie's photo, and what prompted her to want to keep Debbie's face with her? How does she feel as she falls for Debbie?
Alternatively, a fic about what happens next after their kiss in the tunnel would be beyond awesome. Growing a romance together, being silly and sweet and having ridiculous dates would be lovely to see. What happens straight after that match? Is Debbie still nervous about Maria's feelings for her, or do they just...run off together for the evening to laugh and kiss and enjoy the first moments of being in love?
Really, I'm just looking for anything about these two falling in love, being adorable, and preferably kissing some more :-D I'm a big fan of kissing in fic, in case this isn't obvious yet.
Maleficant: Aurora, Maleficant
I know that I'm not the only person who watched this movie and came out with all the femslashy vibes. Maleficant being the one who could wake Aurora with her kiss filled me with so much glee. So, what I'd love the most, is a post-movie story about how Aurora and Maleficant grow their kingdoms together and make lives together. A short glimpse of a happy moment for them, or a longer story about working together to overcome some kind of outside threat - either of these would make me super happy.
If you're not a femslasher, then something exploring their friendship would also be lovely. I'm a huge fan of female friendship and women working together (and kicking ass together).
Bletchley Circle: Lucy, Millie
When I watched this, the friendship between Millie and Lucy was something that I really loved. On the surface, Millie is the strongest of the group and Lucy is the most fragile. But underneath, Millie is just as broken and Lucy has such a strong core to come through her marriage with so much of herself intact. I'd love to read something about their friendship, putting each other back together again. Maybe sitting up in Millie's flat, supporting each other through nightmares via tea. Or perhaps they worked on a few side projects together between season one and two. Or Millie encouraging Lucy back out into the world, and discovering her own love for life in the process.
Femslash or strong friendship is equally great for me in this fandom. I just find the dynamic between these two characters fascinating. And if they're a little in love with each other, it would make me squee.
Scorpion: Happy Quinn, Paige Dineen
We haven't had much chance to see these two working together on the show yet. Admittedly, I'm writing this with only four episodes of reference, but I'm still itching to see how they operate together. Maybe there's a thing happening that all hinges on Happy, and she needs Paige to keep her calm and work through the problem from a non-genius POV. Or maybe Happy and Paige are sent in to do something that's completely out of their experience for both of them - going undercover, for example. I'd just really like something exploring how they'd function together and how their relationship would work when they're both out of their element.
(And, you know, if you're a femslasher...go wild with that :-D)
Sleepy Hollow: Abbie Mills, Jenny Mills
The progression of the story between these two has been one of the delights of this show for me. Sister who start out estranged, but slowly learn to trust and love each other again after they realise they're both working for the same cause. The hurt that Abbie caused Jenny when she made herself forget what they'd seen can't have been as easy to get past as we've seen, so I'd love to see something exploring that would be great.
Or maybe a pre-series fic, about Abby and Jenny as teenagers. We've had hints at what happened and how they grew apart, but I'd love to read more about it. If that can then be tied back to them repairing their relationship as adults, that would be terrific.
Or maybe a fic where it's Abbie and Jenny who have to work together to defeat the monster of the week. How would that work, without Crane in the mix? And how would that affect their growing friendship?
This is one fandom where my leanings are definitely *not* in a femslash direction. Friendship and sisterhood is where I'm at here.
