Almost all the shows I'm watching premiered over the last week (Flash and Arrow are starting this week), so it seems like an appropriate place to do a bit of a round-up :-)

Spoilers behind the cuts, just as a warning.

Sleepy Hollow
There was a few minutes there where I thought they'd chickened out and done a very lame "one year later, we're not showing you how they got out of that finale thing" story and I was all prepared to be grumpy...and then they didn't. Phew!

Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Tom Mison continues to be wonderful as Ichobod, able to convey his incredulity at the insanity of the modern world with one look. Nicole Beharie is perfect as Abbie, and the relationship between her and Ichobod is one of the many things I adore about this show.

Abbie's relationship with Jennie is my other big love, so it was a relief to find that Jennie was a lot less dead than the finale made her look :-) This show is ridiculous, over the top, and utterly wonderful because it just doesn't care that it's ridiculous. And the premier totally went with that and hasn't lost any of the batshittery of last year, which made me very happy.

NCIS and NCIS: New Orleans
These are my "turn off brain, enjoy" shows, and that's really what they gave me. NCIS was a dumb and fun as usual, although the actual plot of the opener didn't do much for me. It set up the big bad for the year (I assume), but it was the character stuff that kept me going.

NCIS: NOLA was the stronger opener of the two, for me. They did the backdoor pilot thing through NCIS last year, so there wasn't much of the set-up stuff that most new shows have to get past, which meant they could cut straight to a decent story without hours of "who are these guys?" stuff. If they keep using the setting well and making me hungry by showcasing yummy food, while telling some silly mysteries, I'll be happy.

Once Upon a Time
A good opener, but possibly not quite in the league of SHIELD or Sleepy Hollow. OUAT always picks up directly from the previous finale, and they did it again this year. It worked because of the Regina story: they couldn't have let that one sit for any length of time without Regina taking action, or they'd lose a lot of what that character is. She reacts fast, thinks about it later, and forms a long-term plan to get what she wants So they got that storyline in motion right up front, before the first break, which worked for her.

I'm still not 100% convinced about Emma/Hook, but I love Hook's character so I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for now.

The idea of hunting down the author of the book and making him write happy endings for the villains works is something I hadn't considered until Regina proposed it, but it makes so much sense! It's a neat way for Regina to get what she wants without turning fully evil (just, you know, a bit evil - witness putting Sidney back in the mirror) and I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes. Unexpected little bit of logic there.

As for the Frozen storyline...I liked it a lot, but I suspect it won't make much sense to anyone who hasn't watched Frozen. My liking of it, though, is probably because I loved the movie and the relationship between Elsa and Anna, and I'm delighted to get some more of that story. I'm just not sure whether it's too soon for OUAT to be covering it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for it.

Forever
I've talked about this one elsewhere, so I'll be brief. It's fun, kind of ridiculous, but the actors are pretty and I love the father-son relationship in it. My only issue is the voice over - please make it go away. I've got a suspicion that it might be an early cancellation, but I have my fingers crossed for it.

Scorpion
This is my Sleepy Hollow of 2014 - the show I didn't plan to watch because the premise sounded awful, but then had to check it out after hearing all the buzz about the first episode.

Yeah, I freaking loved the first episode. It's a total keeper. Please don't let it get cancelled, okay?

The four central characters charmed the hell out of me. Even the lead character, Walter O'Brien, and I usually find the lead of any show is not my favourite. It possibly helps that he's played by the guy who was Guppy on Casualty, and I adored that character :-) It was probably the strongest pilot I saw, featuring a compelling plot that didn't slow down for anything and introducing us quickly (and smoothly) to the strengths of each character.

Scorpion is definitely one to check out if you haven't yet. I'm already hooked and itching for episode two.

I haven't yet watched SH - the husband and I watch that one together, so I tend to be a bit behind on it. :)

OUaT - yeah, my fear was that they would cop out and regress Regina all the way back to villain. Although, I am a little surprised at how definitive the whole "villains don't get happy endings" belief is, when I feel like the show really established that villains can get happy endings if they do something truly self-sacrificing and redeemed, ala Rumple. (Obviously Rumple's story isn't any more done than any of the other "happy endings", but he did get his one true love and even married her!) Anyway, I am a sucker for villains and anti-heroes, so Regina's story is one of my favorites. I am very interested to see what they will do with it now. Hook, of course, is another favorite. I just hope they don't make too much of the lovesick puppy waiting for Emma to come around. He's a pirate! He should be a man of action.

I, too, have fears that Frozen was just too soon. We'll see, I suppose.

I loved the premier of Scorpion! Kind of ridiculous? Yes. But the lead actor has spades of charisma, and I love the connection he's already making with the little boy. The side characters were all interesting, so I'm hoping it doesn't get cancelled. For a pilot, it was very good. :)

I'm not planning on watching any American TV programmes (unless they're really good and are on TV), but which ones are you talking about above? You don't seem to have mentioned any of their names at any point.
