The last of the bingos I've crazily signed up for and my favourite - trope_bingo! And I love, love this card:

I've got the beginning of a high school AU already written, so now I have a push to finish it. Pretty sure my android!Clint fic idea would work for first times/last times.

I scored kidfic again, which means I may be returning to the verse I created for the last kidfic. Language/translation could get me writing that deaf!Clint fic I've been promising I'll tackle one day.

Mikey and I were discussing the sadness that neither of us had written amnesia before, and look! I have amnesia on one square!

And yes, Fahre, laugh it up. I got fuck or die AGAIN. Wonder how I can subvert the trope this time?

What is the Fusion trope? I don't think I've read any of that yet...

Fusion is one of the more confusing kinds of AU and I hadn't even heard of it until I did trope_bingo the first time. Then I realised that I'd read a number of them already and hadn't realised they were called fusion :-D

There's a good explanation here.

Fusion is where the characters from one verse (say, Avengers) exist in another verse as if they've already existed with all the rules of that verse applying to them. As opposed to cross-over where it's, say, the Avengers with all their powers crossing over to Hogwarts. There are two main ways it works:

1) Those characters reenact the events of that other verse. meinterrupted's The Missing Queen Job is an MCU/Leverage fusion with our MCU heroes taking on the various Leverage roles. raiining's Clint Barton, Vampire Slayer series does what it says on the tin.

2) The settings and ideas from the other verse are used for a new story in that verse. Best example I've read of that second type of fusion is Tawg's Avengers/Harry Potter fusion, which isn't set in Hogwarts at all but looks at America in Harry Potter's world. So Bruce Banner has a furry werewolf issue instead of a Hulk issue and Fury heads up the American equivalent to Aurors and it's all utterly genius (everyone should read it), but it isn't retelling the events of Harry Potter because Harry and his friends are doing their thing in England.

Now that I know what fusion fics are, I realise that I've read and loved them and actually prefer them over the straight cross-overs a lot of them time.

Ask me again how much I love them when I'm struggling to write my own :-D

Ah, okay. I don't know why it didn't make sense. I've read Tawg's Avengers/Harry Potter fusion, and enjoyed it.

Can't think I've read many others. Maybe a fusion between Avengers and Dragonriders of Pern...not that great, as I recall.

There are three or so posts in a row on my reading page, all talking about different bingos, and I cannot resist the powerful urge to sign up for all of them. There's something I find irresistible about the bingos that I have never felt about big bang or other writing challenges. And I am ALL ABOUT THE TROPES.

Bingos are awesome :-D Totally different from other challenges because you have so much freedom and at the same time, you've got prompts to spark ideas from.

And if you only do one bingo, you should totally do trope_bingo because it's the best and the prompts are amazing. Particularly if your love for tropes is as strong as mine :-D

I actually completely adore tropes and have already signed up. One of the things I love about fanfic is that I find it very comforting. I stay away from deathfic and that sort of thing unless I'm in the mood for it because when I read fic I want to know where it's going, and that in the end, even if things are horrible and angsty through 2/3 of the story, we are going to a good (and familiar) place. Tropes are the best for this, because they are incredibly familiar and mostly predictable and so they feel safe. Does that make sense? I feel like it marks me a coward and a bad reader because I don't want to be hugely surprised by fic; I like to generally know - not every plot twist, obviously, but the general trajectory. I'm not like this in my reading habits for anything else. I don't read book summaries before I pick them up at the library because I want to come into a book without any idea where it's going. Fic is just different.

It makes total sense and it definitely doesn't make you a bad reader :-D While I don't want to know the details of the plot or get spoiled for the ending of a fic, one of the things I like about reading fic is that I can choose to read or not read specific types of plot. I stay away from certain things (character death, self-harm, rape) in fic because I don't want those things in my head. What I'll read in fic and what I'll read in books on my shelf are quite different.

As you said, one of the great things about tropes is knowing the general shape of what I'm reading. I've got certain tropes that I will seriously jump on every damn time someone writes it because it's a solid gold, 100% love it trope. When I'm in the mood for a certain kind of story, it's usually a trope fic of some particular type and I love the ability to just zero in on the kind of fic I want to read and take my pick.

I've also got a love for people subverting/inverting/folding/spindling etc. the tropes because it's amazing to see what people can do with the basic structure. My terrible love for sex pollen fics is beaten only by my love for subverting the sex pollen trope into something new and amazing :-D

I don't read book summaries before I pick them up at the library because I want to come into a book without any idea where it's going.

You are so much braver than me :-D I always read the summaries just to see whether the book is something I'm likely to be interested in. I've got a bad habit of being pulled in by beautiful and unusual book covers, which has led me to some amazing books and some total stinkers so I do at least take a quick look at the summary before taking it home.

A lot of my book reading comes from recs people have made, though, so there isn't as much casual browsing at the library/bookstore for me.
