My cable station is playing silly buggers again - setting up new episodes as repeats on the program guide so my PVR doesn't record them - so I missed the first couple of minutes of this :-( Grrr. It didn't feel like I missed anything vital, which is a relief, but it's still frustrating.

Anyway. That's enough with being irritable. On to the episode squee!

OK, I freaking loved this. Not kidding, this may be my favourite episode of the season yet. Last week's was enjoyable but fell a wee bit flat for me and was the first one where I wasn't outright squeeing with joy.

'Hide' was the total polar opposite and I adored it to little tiny bitty pieces.

There were so many things to enjoy! Multiple awesome things going on! Wonderful guest characters that I wouldn't mind seeing again!

Original series references!

Someone please tell me I'm not wrong about the Metabilis III crystal the Doctor mentioned being the crystals from the Metabilis III of Planet of Spiders fame. I'm right, aren't I? Because I'm wrong then my squee over that was completely inappropriate but I don't think I am. These shout-outs to the original series make me so damn happy, they really do.

The episode was properly spooky and had me absolutely gripped, including jumping a tiny bit a couple of times. Things that are just out of sight or just hinted are, for me, far more frightening than big scary ugly monsters and they got the tone of that just right here. It was almost like watching one of Moffat's scarier episodes because the atmosphere and spookiness were done just perfectly.

As this is Doctor Who, there was never going to be a ghost but I honestly didn't know where they were going until the big reveal. It was a great idea, I though, and one of the things I particularly loved was all the layers to the time travel storyline. It's one of the things I keep going back to with this story: so many layers. The time traveler, professor's backstory, his story with Emma, Emma's story with everyone else and then the final reveal of the aliens being parted lovers.

The Doctor points out that this story wasn't a ghost story, it was a love story, and it was completely brilliant because it really was. Did I mentioned how much I loved the professor's story and his romance with Emma? It was so beautifully done and Dougray Scott portrayed him so wonderfully.

It didn't occur to me until the end that the Doctor might have another motivation for visiting the house. He's still trying to find out what Clara is and I'm getting more intrigued each week. For just a moment, when the TARDIS's emergency program appeared, I was sure we were finally going to find something out about Clara. Of course I was wrong :-D And to a psychc, even one as powerful as Emma, she's just an ordinary girl with nothing unusual about her.

What the heck are you, Clara?

Emma's comment about the Doctor having a sliver of ice in his heart was chilling, but in some ways not that surprising. He's had it for as long as I can remember, it's the part of his character that lets him make terrible choices sometimes. I wonder what Emma would have seen in the Seventh Doctor?

Last week, there was a scene where Clara sees her first bodies and one of the things that slightly frustrated me was how little reaction she had to them. Her compassion is one of her key characteristics and the bodies didn't seem to shake her much. The scenes where she and the Doctor travel through time and she sees the birth and death of the Earth made up for that in spades. It was such a powerful, heartbreaking scene and Jenna-Louise Coleman got it note perfect.

Going back to the TARDIS, how much do I love that she's sassy and awesome even when she isn't Idris? I'm curious about why she doesn't like Clara, but I do love that she thinks Clara is a bit narcisistic. You get the impression that the TARDIS has a spot of jealousy going on there :-D

I suspect that I've missed half the things I wanted to squee about because this episode was seriously wonderful. But feel free to point at things and squee with me because this was just such a terrific, amazing episode :-D
