Doctor Who 7.09: Cold War
Apr. 13th, 2013 11:06 pmI need to put 'finding a Clara and the Doctor icon' on this week's to do list.
Spoilers!
The tricky thing with this episode was how to taken an icon seventies monster with a fairly naff costume and make it scary and relevant to a modern audience. Particularly when the design of the monster makes it a fairly slow, lumbering creature that frankly required a big stretch of the imagination back in the day because your average toddler could outrun it easily.
So Mark Gatiss put it on a submarine, where its lack of nifty footwork wasn't an issue, and then took it out of the suit for a while so it could fulfill all the traditional tropes of the submarine-and-creature genre. It worked surprisingly well. My only tiny quibble would be that it felt too easily fixed at the end but as I like any episode that doesn't rely on the slaughter of all our enemies, it's only a *tiny* quibble.
I was actually really impressed that they didn't try to update the traditional look of the Ice Warriors very much because that would have negated the point of bringing them back. The Cold War theme has been done a few times but it was nice to see the Russians not being used as the traditional type of Russian bad guy while still keeping the cold war theme going.
I loved the old professor with his love for pop music :-D I kept expecting him to be killed and so it was a bit of a surprise when he was let go. Nice to have a few surprises even in an episode with a fairly set pattern.
I think my favourite moment in the episode was the Doctor's expression when Clara hugged him. I don't even know why I liked that, it was just delightful because he didn't know what to do with himself or how to respond.
Oh, Doctor.
Clara continues to make me fall for her. She's funny and enthusiastic and then so disturbed by those bodies because she's so compassionate. And I'm still completely fascinated by what she'll turn out to be. Moffat, you're killing me here.
Next week's preview looks utterly brilliant and I can't wait to see it. This series, I'm feeling so happy and fannish about it :-D
