Apr. 5th, 2013 05:02 pmThe emails came out today with dates and details for this year's
marvel_bang! Author signups open on May 1st, close on May 8th. If anyone else is interested :-D
Am I doing it again? Hell yeah! Just got to decide what I want to do. I've got a couple of things that might be an appropriate epic length plotted out and I'm leaning toward the Edwardian crime fighting detectives AU right now. Last year I signed up with only the vaguest idea that I'd maybe write a post-movie fix it fic and flailed for six weeks before switching to the vampire story.
The 600 words I wrote for the fix-it got incorporated into something else :-D
Anyway, six weeks of flailing. A couple of weeks of writing then a break to write something else while I flailed some more. I eventually knuckled down and finished the thing with a couple of days to spare before rough drafts were due. All of this was fine and dandy.
Except I sent Fahre my first draft for beta. WE'RE NEVER DOING THAT AGAIN. It's been decided. My usual process is write the first draft, edit and revise heavily (because my first draft is always hideous), send that version to Fahre for beta, edit from beta notes, final read-through and then post. All smooth and seamless.
For the MBB, the process was send for beta, revise heavily, send for beta, revise some more, send for beta...you get the picture. It was hell for both of us. This year will be different. This year I'd like to be done with the first draft a couple of weeks before I'm due to send that in so I've got two solid weeks to go through the manuscript and scribble sarcastic notes to myself all over it.
That way, even if what I send my artist is still the rough draft, I can flag up all the sections that are likely to be extensively revised when I send the draft.
Then I'll do my major heavy edits BEFORE I sent it to Fahre. So hopefully only one beta round will be required.
At least this time I should be signing up with a fic that I'll actually start writing immediately rather than losing six weeks to major flailing.
Feel free to mock me when I start flailing in mid-May :-D
Does anyone know if/when any Avengers-specific Big Bangs are running? I liked Marvel Big Bang last year, but it would be good to know what all the options are before I commit. Or, you know, have some idea on whether I want to do more than one BB this year :-D
It might be fun to try out a reverse big bang, if that's running again.
Fahre, stop looking at me like that. I vowed not to sign up for any challenges until after March. It's after March. No, don't shake your finger at me. I'm not going to overload myself again this year, I promise. Um.
In other news...
I'm so freaking happy that it's Friday and I can sleep for a long time tomorrow. So damn tired. There are things I need to do (specifically, do the paper edits on the mechanic AU) but my major aim tomorrow is to catch up on some sleep and read the latest Fables tpb. With Doctor Who as the highlight of the day, obvs :-D
Last night I did some housekeeping on my PVR and officially broke up with Gray's Anatomy. It's gone. All episodes deleted and setting removed. This way I won't decide to watch the last few episodes, just for completion, and end up getting sucked back in again. Nope.
I'm also seriously considering breaking up with Bones at the end of the season. That will leave me with NCIS, CSI:NY, Arrow, and Once Upon a Time as my regular cable tv shows.
Er, yes, I have noticed that frees up some time and space for the SHIELD tv show :-D
OK, maybe I should also admit that I intend to add Teen Wolf to the schedule when (if *sigh*) it starts airing up here in June. MTV is, apparently, completely different up here from what's shown in the States so I'll just have to wait and see what airs where. Oh, Canada, you continue to baffle me five years after moving here.
At least SHIELD will be on ABC and that means we'll definitely get it up here :-D
And I'll be recording it off ABC if at all possible, particularly if CTV gets it as well, because I don't trust CTV with things after the clusterfuck that's been their Arrow broadcasts.
*looks at previous journal entries* Wow, this week I've apparently been obsessed with TV despite not watching much. Must be the total mind-melting exhaustion. Next week I'll be talking about something much more sensible.
Like comics :-D

Date: 2013-04-07 12:07 am (UTC)I'm actually tempted by this whole idea but...it's not like I don't already have things on the plate. And NO ideas for a BB story. And hell the mechanic!AU has hit 10k and it's not done yet. WTF, self? *sigh*
Anyway I LOVE the idea of Edwardian crime fighting detectives! I saw your tumblr post about making it Steampunk/alternate-history and I think that's a wise move; no one can slam you for lacking historical accuracy when the whole premise is historically inaccurate to start with, yeah? Anyway I did a huge story that required a lot of historical research and SAVE YOURSELF DON'T GO DOWN THAT ROAD. :P

Date: 2013-04-07 01:17 am (UTC)It didn't go live until November, but it's probably getting close to a year since I started it. I'm marvelling slightly that it's coming up for a year since I dove back into fic writing *blink blink blink*
And hell the mechanic!AU has hit 10k and it's not done yet. WTF, self? *sigh*
Pfft! The fact that you've written 10k without struggling for words should be a sign that a BB is doable :-D Plus you get art for your fic. Which is always awesome :-D
no one can slam you for lacking historical accuracy when the whole premise is historically inaccurate to start with, yeah?
I've done some research already, figuring out things like where Scotland Yard was at the time I'm writing and trying to find just how very inaccurate Fury and Hill would be. So I'd still need to do some things but it would give me a lot more license with my accuracy if I've got dirigibles and steam-powered butlers and so forth :-D
SAVE YOURSELF DON'T GO DOWN THAT ROAD. :P
I'M TRYING, TRUST ME :P

Date: 2013-04-06 06:46 pm (UTC)Who is your ship, if you don't mind me asking?
And is it likely that I might have read anything with them in so that I could possibly beta if you decide to go for it?

It depends on whether you were reading Defenders back in the 80s. :) They're both still active (he was in Journey Into Mystery and I gather she'll be showing up in Fearless Defenders soon. But he was a very different character back in the day so it's a definite fix-it or AU situation. Still, the JM Dematteis run of Defenders (92-125 or so) is well worth reading.

Date: 2013-04-05 10:51 pm (UTC)Last year's problem won't be happening again 'cause ALL OF IT was due to the multiple universe concept.
So, breathe. Have some more tea. Breathe some more. Then remember: It. Won't. Happen. Again. *patpatpat*

Date: 2013-04-06 06:49 pm (UTC)It definitely won't happen again :-D
The fic will have one POV character because, if I do the Edwardian detectives thing, it's an entirely Phil POV fic. I'm debating giving it a touch of steampunk so that I can more easily get away with sticking Fury and Hill into high police positions, which would also enable me to have a bit of fun with some gadgets for one or two sections. Two birds, one stone kind of thing.
Think that might not be entirely awful?

Yeah, somehow me saying "I might steampunk it up a tiny bit" seems to have got people even more excited than they were about this. And anyone I've talked to about it has been pretty damn excited.
And not just because valet!Clint doing valet type stuff for Phil while being his secret crime-fighting partner seems to hit a lot of kinks for people :-D

Date: 2013-04-07 11:49 pm (UTC)Dude, Edwardian Detectives alone is amazing. Steampunking said Edwardian Detectives is kicking open the door to RDJ!Holmes magnificence with Phlint! *runs around in arm!flappying circles*

... That's not a kink so much as the 'As You Wish' button. O.O
