Doctor Who: The Snowmen
Dec. 26th, 2012 10:37 amEntire non-spoiler thoughts: Squee!
Spoilery thoughts:
I love the Christmas Doctor Whos and this is definitely high on my list of favourites. The progression of the Doctor from hurt and uncaring back to being excited, hopeful and enthusiastic was beautifully done. It really emphasised that he can't travel alone, he needs people to take him out of his darker side. Spending such a long time grieving for Amy and Rory makes sense because I can't recall any companions that he's spent so long with, but it was good to see him shaken out of that.
And shaken out of that by someone like Clara, who I adored when we only knew Oswin and now may have a small crush on.
Oddly enough, this may actually be the first time I've seen a companion that I wouldn't completely object to having shippy stuff with the Doctor. No, I don't know why. Yes, I'm excited to see where Moffat is going with that.
The story about the Snowmen and their plan to rule the world almost felt incidental, in some ways. That's probably because I was squeeing so loudly about everything else: my interspecies lesbian lovers (I want an entire series about them, seriously), Strax the muderous nurse, the Doctor's journey back to who he was.
Clara's different faces in the story, the barmaid and the governess, were beautifully done. She's a really delightful character.
AND NOW I'M SO INTRIGUED.
Why does the Doctor keep finding her? Why does she keep dying? WHO IS SHE REALLY AND WHY IS SHE ALMOST THE SAME BUT NOT QUITE EACH TIME?
Seriously, I was slightly meh about season 7.2 but now I'm uncontrollably excited to see where it goes. Moffat seems to be doing something incredibly cool and although I've only seen Clara/Oswin twice, I'm now caring about her and desperately want to know who/what she is.
I'm also rather in love with the Doctor's joy and excitement about her. It's so charming and adorable.
I'm going to be waiting impatiently for the spring now. And probably rewatching this about fifty billionty times.

Date: 2012-12-26 11:16 pm (UTC)If I'm honest, I could have done without the Doctor's comments to Strax being a Blackadderesque serious of appearance-based insults, because that should be beneath the Doctor, of all people.
But it was great, and good, and yes, there shall be much rewatching.
