The perils of reading new fanfic...

selenayLast night I opened a fic, got through the first few paragraphs with barely restrained laughter, scanned the rest of the fic and just backed away because...
The word "said" is not a banned word. If you've got a 1,600 word fic that's mostly dialogue and the word "said" doesn't appear once? But someone "huffed", "ordered", and "ejaculated" (no, no, never ever use that one in slash fic, not kidding here, I nearly died from the LOL) all their dialogue then there is definitely a problem.
I'm sorry, it might have been good. But all I could see was the increasingly weird and desperate methods the author was using to avoid the word "said". It was almost like reading a parody of the avoid-said problem, except the author apparently didn't intend it to be a parody.
No, I won't be passing on the link. That's just mean. I'm just going to sit and giggle quietly at the memory of it.
In other news...
Today I put up the Christmas decorations in my cubicle. Houston, we need more decorations. My cubicle looks pathetic. Guess I'm hitting the stores at the weekend.

Date: 2012-12-06 08:58 pm (UTC)I'm reading a lot of new fic because I'm still in the shiny new love stage of a fandom. Mostly this is working out and I've figured out how to avoid the worst stuff based on summaries and tags.
But there's always the ones with a decent summary that have, uh, issue. I haven't seen anyone working so hard to avoid "said" for a long time, though.
