Doctor Who 6.07: Let's Kill Hitler
Aug. 28th, 2011 01:56 pmOMG, squeee!! That was approximately my reaction last night...
I'm sure plenty of people will find the faults for me. I was very happy with this episode. It was lighter, there were lots of wonderful lines and even though the sense of fun was high, there was a lot of emotional stuff in this and I confess to being a tiny bit teary towards the end.
That opening, with the crop circles and so on, was great and set the tone for the episode. I loved the look back to Rory, Amy and Mels growing up. Not only did it show us how they 'raised' Mels, it was good to finally get a look at how and why Amy and Rory became such a lovely couple. Their relationship has been beautifully done - one of the highlights of this year - and seeing the origins added some depth that we didn't have before.
As for Mels...
She was a much brasher, rawer version of the River that we've come to know and love. It was obvious how much the brain-washing affected her, but I could easily see that this person would become River (once we were let in on the secret, anyway!). I found the post-regeneration discovery sequence slightly awkward, but also quite believable in someone who was essentially a 'child' still.
It was nice to see Moffat giving a canon reason for Alex Kingston's aging (love that man) and even though I knew that something had to lead to her death in the Library, I was still sad and a bit shocked to see her give up all her regenerations to save the Doctor. I'm starting to think that we may not see River again after this series and I'm going to miss her hugely.
The idea of the justice creature, populated by hundreds of miniature people, was cool and I like the idea that they extract war criminals at the end of their lives. I'm actually glad that it was only a small part of the overall plot, though, because I'm not sure that it could sustain an episode as the main plot.
There were so many things about this episode that had me squeeing last night and I'm sure that I've missed half of them in this summary. Overall, though, I basically loved it to bits and definitely need to re-watch it at least once.
Also, next week is a long way away and the episode looks like it will be bloody terrifying!
Note: those cookies that I linked to in Friday's post? Possibly the best recipe EVA. Totally nom. And wouldn't be the same without the cocoa nibs, just FYI.

That sort of thing is very much a Moffat trademark. Loved it. Looking forward to watching the episode again.
