So this is my reaction about five minutes after watching the episode plus the Confidential. Tomorrow could be busy (Easter) so I wanted to get something up. There may be a slightly more insightful post later: I suspect this post is going to be high on the squee quotient.

To that end, onwards! Really, don't click if you don't want to be spoiled for the whole darned thing.

I shall come right out and say that I absolutely loved it. What was I scared about? Of course it was going to be good! Moffat wouldn't let me down with a bad script and Matt Smith has done a fantastic job. All my nerves and fears and worries were totally groundless.

Oh, silly me.

Yes. That script. I honestly didn't notice that 65 minutes had gone. It felt like no time. Moffat is a genius, as always. Quite different from his usual stuff, but also definitely Moffat. The idea of young Amelia and grown-up Amy was wonderful. The Doctor has always had some issues with the accuracy of the TARDIS and Moffat used that idea in a beautiful way. It explains a lot about Amy, although I still have questions.

Biggest question: what was so dreadful about the aunt that young Amelia was willing to run away with the Doctor so quickly?

Are we going to see the aunt?

Will Amy tell the Doctor about her wedding?

Having that connection between the Doctor and Amy makes their relationship very different from anything that we've seen before. It reminded me of Madame Pompador (odd that *g*) except that instead of falling in love with her imaginary friend, Amy was damaged by the encounter.

And speaking of Amy...

OK, I'd dismissed the kiss-a-gram rumours because they were in the Sun. My world is askew. The Sun was right. The worst part is that I like it, possibly much more than the police thing that we were being fed by the production team. There were certain expectations that I had for Amy because she was police: now those expectations have been blasted away and I can't wait to see what Moffat does with this.

The story was part fairytale and part amazing chase. Mixed in with the high speed hi-jinks there were some fantastic quiet moments - I loved the scene by the car where the Doctor gives Amy the apple and the entire kitchen sequence with young Amelia is just priceless.

(Yes, I did snicker in the Confidential at the number of times Matt failed to get a bite out of the apple. Hee.)

When he was first announced, I really didn't know what to make of Matt Smith. He's so young! Over the last few months he's grown on me a lot because of the way that he's thrown himself into the part and really done more homework than I'd ever expected. The trailers have given me a sense of what he might be and that helped. However, the real test was always going to be seeing him on the screen.

I'm converted already. Love the new Doctor. He's got that childlike wonder back. Ten had been getting jaded and cynical: Eleven is all new again and he's seeing the world as something new and amazing. At the same time, he's the Doctor and he can tell aliens to run and we know that they're going to.

That entire rooftop sequence was fantastic. The Doctor finally becoming his new self, but at the same time we see all that footage of his previous selves and his enemies.

May I just remark on how much I love that Moffat got that in? And that he got in old footage as well as new Doctor Who footage? Am I right in thinking that I spied a Silurian?

Woah, why does Firfox spell check know Silurian?

The rooftop was just right with that mix of old and new, the Shadow Proclamation and the declaration that the plant is protected coming at the same time as the Doctor finally shows what his new self will be.

Moffat has done a great job of referencing the original series while also making this part of new Who. I love the new credits, the blend of old Radiophonics haunting music with the orchestral behind it.

Lastly, I must discuss the TARDIS. The new interior is amazing. It's got the roundels, the console and the rotor to reference the original TARDIS set (I'm talking classic as well as RTD era) but it's just amazing. There's so much space! The scale is amazing. It's a 360 degree set, the stairs actually go to different levels of the set and I really want to step inside and examine it more closely.

That may be my favourite bit of the Confidential. The set designer is rightly proud of his work and has actually worked out what everything does, drawing maps for Matt so that he can be pressing the right buttons. I think this is what I love about the set: the level of detail is astounding. I can't wait to see it in action.

In fact, I really want a bottle episode this season where we get to explore more of the TARDIS beyond the console room. I'm a sad person who loves that kind of thing.

In conclusion, I loved this. My two biggest squees were during the past Doctors sequence and the tour of the new TARDIS, but there was no part of this that I didn't enjoy. Matt Smith is doing a great job, love Amy and, most importantly, Moffat's script was everything that I've come to expect from that man.

Is it next week yet?

What was I scared about?

Yes, what were you scared about? You've seen Press Gang :)

possibly much more than the police thing that we were being fed by the production team

I've not been reading rumours etc, but do you mean to say that there were people aside from the reviewer in The Observer, that actually thought she was a policeman based on the pictures?

Am I right in thinking that I spied a Silurian?

You might think that, but I couldn't possibly comment :)

Woah, why does Firfox spell check know Silurian?

Because it's a proper word for an era back when there were dinosaurs.

Is it next week yet?

No, not when there's still two days off and Ashes to Ashes to come before then!

Ah, the only photos I saw of Amy in the uniform showed the skirt too. That explains why people were confused.
