Not nervous. Really.
Jan. 10th, 2005 05:57 pmInterview tomorrow ::gulp:: I've never really had a job interview before, so I'm a little nervous about what to expect. My feelings about the job also keep changing. On one level, I liked the sound of the job in the advert and the information they've given on the company sounds like it's small, but friendly. After four years in the accounts department of a major company, with the associated "couldn't give a shit" attitude to staff, that sounds nice. On the other hand, first glance at their company website didn't give me much confidence that it's a fit for me. Closer reading of their website was more encouraging, but will a company with a (IMO) poor website be a good place to work as a trainee developer?
On a third hand, their ad did indicate that some web design ability might be helpful and I can already identify areas where their site could be improved to look more professional. Except that might be critisizing the hard work of a potential future boss.
On a fourth hand, their ad was enthusiastic about potential training and my involvement level in projects, which could make it a great first step in the field.
On a fifth hand, I have no idea what their product actually does and couldn't garner much from their rather content-absent website.
I'm conflicted ::sigh:: And possibly going to become an octopuss. I'm gonna go in there, be myself, hope that I wow them and see what they're like in the flesh. I'm not hanging my future on it :-) If they like me and I like them, then that's cool. If I don't like them or they don't want me, I'll move on and chalk this one up to experience. If nothing else, at least I'll know what to expect from interviews once this one is over.
On another point, is it crazy to be put off applying for a job because the advert seems to have been written by a crazed monkey? Complete with spelling that would even make bad-ficcers wince? Nope, didn't think so :-)
Today wasn't terribly productive. No news on the temp front, but at least it gave me some time to write a couple more job applications (go me!) and do a little prep work for the interview. I did some more work on the PHP/MySQL book and plan to throw myself into that if I don't get any work this week. I really want the review archive up on a database by the time I begin a career-type job - maintaining the damn thing will be much easier and updates will be much more likely.
Maybe after my interview tomorrow I'll take the afternoon off and read fic to recover. Yeah, that sounds like fun :-)
ETA: Have booked my tickets for SG-10. God, I hope that I'm employed by then and can actually afford the con :-)
