Lethal weapons
Jan. 7th, 2005 11:31 pm::bounce:: I had my first archery lesson tonight :-) It was tres cool. Woo! I'm gonna be an archer. I even got the arrows to go in the target ::feels pleased::
Still no work, but I did sign with another temping agency. Also no more interviews and couldn't find anything to apply for today :-( I tried to find a new shirt for the interview on Tuesday, but the local stores sucked majorly due to the sales. So tomorrow I'm going to a bigger town with bigger stores and I'm taking a friend to help. We'll find me an interview shirt if it kills me :-)
I'm now itching to write Telya/Weir, but I need to re-watch The Eye first. The next fic picks up with the final few moments of the episode and it's been a couple of weeks since I saw it. I did get to see The Defiant One last night :-)
First I have to squee a little over Elizabeth. Decisive! Anticipatory of Sheppard and MacKay's ability to get in trouble! Sure of herself! And, damn, she's beautiful when she's being commanding :-)
So far there hasn't been an unwatchable Atlantis episode. Yay! The Wraith ship was suitably creepy, the Wraith was believably un-killable and it was great fun to see Shep trying to out-think and out-gun it. I recognised Nyan's actor immediately, but he convinced me that he was playing a different character, which was good. I've heard comments about the actor-recycling that's been happening between Atlantis and Stargate and I'm in two minds about it. I can see why people don't like it - yes, we do recognise them and it would be daft if TPTB didn't realise this. But OTOH there is a limited pool of actors available for short, one-off appearances. I'd guess that 80% of fans, at least, wouldn't have recognised Nyan. Especially the ones who don't know the early seasons well. It's the long-term fans who have seen each episode several times who immediately recognise re-used actors.
So I'm conflicted on it and conflicted I will stay.
Anyway, I liked the character that Nyan-actor was playing. I knew from reading spoilers how his character ends, but it was still a little shocking. Atlantis is already showing itself to be, at times, a little darker than Stargate. That's something that I hope they keep because it helps to differenciate the two.
I loved the idea that the Wraith had only partially fed on him, so he was considerably aged and dying. It made the whole Wraith-feeding thing a little creepier. The Wraith canabalism thing was even creepier ::shudders:: Yeah, they're bad guys, but eating each other? Wrong, on so many levels. Definitely a nasty group of bad guys.
The final sequence, McKay running to the rescue and Ford blowing up the Wraith, was a great resolution. Team effort, guys! Plus...yeah, Nyan-actor was right. McKay has changed and it shows. His character has been given growth, in good directions, without losing the essence of what makes him McKay. I hope they continue in that vein - good character development is vital to any show and I love these characters :-)
Only niggle? Not enough Teyla. She did get a couple of nice moments in Atlantis and the Jumper, but I'm looking forward to the promised Teyla ep. There was a brief look and nod moment between Elizabeth and Teyla that made slashy little heart pitter. Yay! I can work with that :-)
Confession time: have three Stargate episodes backed up and just haven't found time to watch them. Bad Sel. I regard this as a bad sign. Must recapture the Stargate love and try not to let the shiny new fandom take over completely.
I tried to make icons today. They were *bad* ::sigh:: Maybe I'll have more luck tomorrow...

Date: 2005-01-08 12:55 am (UTC)Oh wow! Now that's something I'd definitely like to do myself. It sounds like you had a great time too.
I did sign with another temping agency
*HUGS!*
Good luck with that. I hope you find work. I was signed on with a temping agency back in 1997 and had a hard time with the way they did things too. I also ended up in one of those jobs I enjoyed until they decided to lay off people around the holidays starting with the temps. It can prove to be very frustrating at times. I hope everything works out for you! I'll be praying for you! : D

Date: 2005-01-09 05:39 pm (UTC)It was great fun - can't wait for next week's session :-)
I hope you find work.
Thanks. At the moment things aren't desperate, but it was a little frustrating to have a job fall through *sigh* I'm used to the way these things work and always half expect to be told that I'm not needed when I arrive - at least they'll pay me for a couple of days' work. So, y'know, it could be worse. And hopefully this won't be for long and I'll get a proper job with regular wage soon.

Date: 2005-01-08 09:34 am (UTC)Cool. Archer Sel & Swordswoman Nic, we'd better watch out at cons! *gg* Yes, bring those women with the hardware to the front of the queue. They want to stay with Teryl all through the signing. Let them, they have sharp pointy things. ;-) Yes, I know neither you or Nic would, but I have a strange brain and only had one coffee so far.
There's a strange set up in Canada for acting IIRC. You have the 'radio' actors who hardly seem to do any TV work. Then you have those with a theatre/stage background who do work in TV. That makes for a small pool of talent. You also have the SAG issue from the US as well, that reduces the American actors who'll appear. There's been a few Brit actors who've moved over there for the work, that number seems to be on the increase.
I tried to make icons today.
So did I, don't know if they are good, bad or indifferent. I can never tell with my own. The one up top is one of them. Dr. Gaius Baltar (James Callis) from BSG, it's a lust thing. ;-)
Going to mail you later, be prepared.
Oh, and while I'm here. Thanks for telling Saz about the books. I thought I'd asked who the author was and let her know. These meds are playing havoc with my short-term memory. Have to write things down and put the notes in a spottable place.

Date: 2005-01-08 11:50 pm (UTC)I do tae kwon do as well, so I don't need the sharp pointy things to be dangerous :)
(I do have actual swords as well)

Very, nice. Starting to understand why BSG is so popular...
Thanks for telling Saz about the books.
You're welcome. I was just hoping that I'd remembered the right books - trying to remember details of a late night conversation? Not one of my talents :-)
