This evening I decided that it would be a good idea to enter all the books sitting on my coffee table into LibraryThing. These are all the books that have entered this house on or since Christmas Day and I've been looking at the piles feeling slightly worried for a while.

Er, it turns out that there 23 books there. 23.

While a few (er, maybe six) were Christmas presents, that means the rest have been acquired with the spending of my own money. Bad Sel.

In my defence, more than half the rest of the books were second hand including two Abbey Girls books and an Antonia Forest, all picked up in England. There were also assorted Enid Blytons, Trebizons and a lovely old CS Lewis that fits with the set that I've been collecting.

Er, yes, there were three duplicates in there. That will teach me to go to bookshops without my lists! I think that I'll list those on BookMooch. As one is a Trebizon and the other a Naughtiest Girl, I'm fairly sure they'll go quickly.

Looking at the number of books that I've acquired in a little under three months is terrifying and I've made a resolution. No more new books until May. I must read things from the to be read pile (currently 141 books without adding in the non-fiction) or borrow from the library. Nope, not even second hand. If anyone spots me attempting to buy books they must sit on me firmly. I can go six weeks without buying new book, surely?

No new books. I tried that recently. First I made an exception for books from the charity shop, then books the library was selling, then anything bought in the 2 for 1 crime sale at borders, now while I'm not quite a 23 I suspect I'm not far behind.

Thank you. I have already set the rules and instructed friends on what they are: no books means No Books. Not second hand, not charity, not great sales in the library.

No Books.

How bad will the withdrawal be, do you suppose? Are there 12 step programs for this? Because I have acknowledged that 23 books in less than three months is insane, but now that I've acknowledged the addiction I need some help for it.

I don't want to think about how many new books I've bought in the last few months. Due to my database reconstruction, it's hard to tell what was really new and what had just been sitting in my tbr pile for ages.

My real problem is that I have credits everywhere. Bookmooch, LibraryThing, the bookstore in Niantic. I bought a batch with a $50 Amazon gift certificate and got a few arcs at Comic Con. And while I'm trying to thin out the collection, I have a limit to what I can list and pack and mail at one time.

Which Trebizon? I'm missing a few and maybe I should check and request it from you. ;)

I've got a ton of Amazon.ca vouchers that I need to use, so I'll have to either get DVDs or wait a couple of months. Bookmooch is good for getting rid of books, but then it's so easy to get more!

My Trebizon duplicate is Summer Camp. I'll get it up on Bookmooch as soon as I have a spare two minutes and you'll get first dibs if you don't have it yet.

I have less space for DVDs than I do for books, and the collection is growing almost as fast.

I have Summer Camp, so don't reserve it for me. But, thank you for offering.

My DVD collection, at least, is still under control and staying that way. Unless it's something really special, I tend to restrict DVD purchases to when I have vouchers to spend because there aren't a huge number (barring Doctor Who) of things that I'll want to rewatch enough to justifying buying rather than renting.

Thanks for letting me know about Summer Camp - now I don't have to feel guilty about not getting it onto BM tonight :-)

If I'm going to avoid running out of bookshelf space before the new Ikea (with lovely Billy bookcases) arrives, a book diet is needed. The library and my to be read pile shall suffice. It's not like my to be read pile doesn't have over a hundred books on it...
