Snow, topped with ice pellets and then topped with freezing rain forms an impenetrable barrier that is impossible to shovel.
How do I know this? Well, the company that was supposed to be coming out to plough me today has a funeral and possible pneumonia (WTF?) and so cannot come out. I just slithered (very carefully) down my back steps, around my house and up my front steps so that I could chip the front door open. The ice on top of the snow held my weight, that's how well frozen in I am. And now I don't have anyone coming to free me, either. The company they suggested I call hasn't called back even though I left the message an hour and a half ago. Apparently the companies my original guys called to help won't come out for an itty bitty driveway when there are lots of nice big commercial contracts to do.
Even pulling out the disability card didn't work.
Can I cry now?
The only thing that I can think of is to go out and try to clear it all in stages, but my wrists are already sore from chipping out my front door and steps. Looks like I won't be going out tonight after all because it could take me the rest of the week to get myself out of here.
I knew it was too good to be true that I might not have to do much shovelling this time around *sigh*

Date: 2009-02-04 01:01 pm (UTC)Maybe you can pay a neighbour? Is there a convenience store around where you could post a help wanted sign? My parents are lucky enough to have a snow blower, plus a friend who will come plow them out in exchange for pie.

Date: 2009-02-04 01:08 pm (UTC)I don't know my neighbours well enough to ask (and can't actually get to them to ask in the first place). If I ever get myself out of here then I'll see if I can put a notice up in the convenience store, but that's 3km away and I'm trapped in my own home right now.
Totally ready to sit in a corner and cry all day. Except that won't get the snow cleared.

Date: 2009-02-04 01:14 pm (UTC)Sorry :P
I would love to be stuck at home, though since my work is open I wouldn't get paid, but we get like emergency days or something.

Date: 2009-02-04 01:10 pm (UTC)What you need is something like sand or salt or something hot to melt away the ice (not hot water, that will just freeze and make things worse). Or preferably someone who does this professionally. Once you're free, start asking around - maybe your neighbours know someone reliable.

Date: 2009-02-04 01:20 pm (UTC)I've got salt. I chucked a ton onto the path, as far as I could reach. It's not had much effect yet. Bleh. I've put up a notice on the web forum for the area and I'll have to see about asking neighbours when I can finally leave this place.
I'd been considering getting myself a small house when I need to move out of this place and now I've changed my mind: definitely an apartment. No way am I doing this stupidity every winter for the rest of my life!

Date: 2009-02-04 01:23 pm (UTC)Yeah, salt and sand are tricky when it's too cold.
It's times like these when I'm glad I'm in an apartment.

Date: 2009-02-04 02:10 pm (UTC)My aunt called the Lion's Club and explained the situation. Someone will apparently be coming out later this morning to see what he can do, so there is hope yet. Or at least, more hope than there was earlier this morning.

Date: 2009-02-04 01:29 pm (UTC)At the very least, instead of chipping small amounts of ice away, you could just melt it off. Of course, that wouldn't work for large amounts (such as the entire driveway), and runs the risk of causing damage from the hot water (so don't try it on glasswork, such as the car!)

Date: 2009-02-04 02:12 pm (UTC)Thanks for thinking of me, though. My aunt called the local Lion's Club, explained the situation and someone is coming later in the morning to take a look at things. Hopefully this option will actually work out!
The car can be tended to when I can I actually get to it. I rather suspect that most of the doors will be frozen shut...

Date: 2009-02-04 02:15 pm (UTC)I was thinking more of ice a few millimetres thick, which would be enough to stick a door in place. But then, I'm used to Oxford's definition of "Freezing cold": we've had about an inch of snow, most of which didn't freeze, but could just be brushed off, even by my windscreen wipers.

Date: 2009-02-04 02:19 pm (UTC)I had a big chunk that had wedged my front door closed - hence having to skate around from the back door to chip it open. The ice is so thick that it holds my weight on top of the snow. That's actually even more dangerous than just snow - it's literally like trying to walk on an ice-rink and about as easy to chip at.
If it was showing any sign of warming in the near future then I wouldn't worry, but the highest it's going to be going in the next few days is -3C. Yuk.
I've decided that I'm gonna be moving into an apartment when my parents want the house back. This is somewhere beyond insane and I cannot cope with many winters like this.

I hope you get out soon. Don't do too much though, you could hurt yourself so easily.

Date: 2009-02-05 12:42 pm (UTC)Would you believe that I hurt myself, not on the ice, but by tripping on nothing inside my house this morning? Yeah.

Date: 2009-02-06 09:59 am (UTC)I know, we don't have that much snow most of the time. It's been a bit different from our usual winter this year! Still, they always seem to be caught on the hop and everyone panics. Bit of a pet peeve *g*
