Today I was given access to the Unix logins so I got to play around and learn something. Most importantly, I learned how to check the logs that I will need to check each morning which means that I finally have something to do!

OK, so I have something to do for 5 minutes a day and I've exhausted the list of 'things I can do to play around in Unix' after seven hours solid of it *sigh*

I am trying to persuade myself that this job will get better.

The girl in the cubicle next door popped around for a quick chat because we both have birthdays in November and she's never met anyone with a birthdate in her month. So that was nice.

Somehow, I think that I felt better before I started work. OK, so I was excited about having routine in my life again, getting out and meeting people...but this isn't what I thought it would be.

The good news is that desperation and boredom are having their usual effect - I've got writing juices flowing again.

My aunt called today to give me the news that my uncle is coming for Christmas. Yay! In fact, he arrives about three days before Mum and Da so Suzanne and I are planning to make it a surprise. She'll be so chuffed :-)

Now I'm going to write a bit, then watch some TV before heading for an early night.

Unix? And the job is to check log files? Err, that's what scripts, and cron jobs are for! Then you can reduce the 5 minutes to 15 seconds of reading your email.

(I've no idea whether you've got any prior familiarity with Unix. But I've once read a set of instructions which said: "Every morning: Do this, do that, then check the last line of the file to see the number of errors is 0". It took 5 minutes to automate it, and send an email saying whether there were errors that needed further investigation. People were amazed!)

It sounds a lot like my work when they have new people in and don't have time to train them. You need to give it a few weeks and then it'll improve I'm sure.

I've nearly finished the Mercedes Lackey book and I'm really enjoying it. It has Selenay in, which is slightly surreal :) Given that me and Hilary are going to the World's Biggest Bookshop on Sunday, if I wanted to buy another of hers, what's best to look for next?
