We've got a new TV/video/DVD system. It looks very cool, although I do have a lot of manuals to read so that I can figure out how the hell to use it all. Best part - DVD recorder. Yay! I can finally transfer some old videos (1980s old) onto DVD and they'll take up much less space. Plan is to transfer all the videos that we've record (ranging from old Doctor Who eps and Tour coverage through to the ballet shows that my sister and I used to dance in) onto DVD and ditch the originals. Honestly, I've been afraid to play the videos for the past few years incase they die on me. So big yay for that.

I haven't had time to watch last night's Stargate, but I was unable to resist the lure of new Atlantis.

First thought? "Someone has read Peter Pan way too often." Sorry, but my first instinct when the team was surrounded by kiddie archers was that they'd found the Lost Boys.

Ahem.

It was a fun episode. Not one of the best ever, but I could find plenty to enjoy. McKay's interaction with the kids was just priceless. The two little ones were very annoying, but then so was I at that age - Mom says that she wished the word 'why' had never been invented. McKay's irritation was beautifully played and I loved that he didn't really lighten up on them, even at the end. Stargate needs a character that just isn't good with children and never will be. Loved his attempt to order the older kids (y'know, the ones with the bows who threatened to skewer him until they realised that his device made the Wrait-thingy die) to go to bed. That man has obviously never baby-sat. Even eight year olds will automatically refuse an order to bed. It's like kids a preprogrammed to rebel against that particular order more than any other.

Really, this episode was a McKay one. It may look like a Sheppard ep, but McKay stole it. He was arrogant to the point of selfishness (why yes, it's always a good idea to steal other people's only forms of the defence), pissy, snarky, opinionated, self-confident to the max and completely lacking in empathy. He also did the right thing in the end despite that and that's why I'm loving him more each week.

I was a little surprised that Sheppard agreed so quickly to 'borrow' the ZPM and possibly the shield technology. It's not a reaction that I'd expect from him, but then this is only the sixth episode and I shouldn't expect every facet of his character to have been shown already. Otherwise this would be a very boring show because there would be nothing new to discover about the characters.

I was less surprised that he attempted to pursuade the elder kid, Keras, not to go through with the suicide. That definitely fits Sheppard's established personality and there was no way that the episode couldn't 'go there' when that idea had been established. Cliche to have them arrive on Keras's sacrifice day? You betcha. But they couldn't have written anything else once they'd put that story element in.

Sheppard's determination to get the shield working again when they'd determined what it was doing redeemed him from his moral wobble over the illicit borrowing and I'm glad the show acknowledged that the villagers will have a lot of readjusments to go through now that they aren't sacrificing themselves.

Ford's interaction with the little kids was cute (and I'm not saying anything else about that), but that was really the only thing that I remember about his role in the episode. Hmmm.

Teyla, sadly, didn't have much to do and Weir was barely in it. I guess they're making up for the extra Teyla-Weir screen time last week. Darn.

I loved the little in-jokes, adored McKay's Windows comment (yes, I am a computer programmer to the core) and will probably need a rewatch to fully absorb the wonderful McKay-ness.

So, not one of Atlantis's greatest episodes but I can find plenty to enjoy it in nevertheless.

I managed to do a little work on the original novel - a very little. But at least the ideas are following better:

New words handwritten: approx. 250
Total words handwritten: 14,000

No comment on the typed up totals :-) My second Teyla/Weir short thing just needs a final read-through before I post it anywhere.

Didn't you think Keras had a told crush/hero worship thing for Shep?
