Bad fic and more Stolen Earth thoughts
Jul. 1st, 2008 10:30 amSometimes, I despair of my fellow fic writers. I get an RSS feed of new fics
at Teaspoon, just the titles and summaries so that I can take a look at
what's being posted. I don't have access to Teaspoon at work so I just
browse the titles and mark anything for follow-up that I might want to read
at home.
It is often painful in the extreme, but this morning's gem? "My Night with
the Doctor". Erp. Smutty fanfiction is one thing, but I really do not need
to read other people's porny fantasies starring themselves. Part of me hopes
that it was a humourous, ironic fic that is the polar opposite of title and
summary. The other 95% of my mind knows fic writers far too well.
When DW fic is done well, it really is some of the best fic out there. Sadly
it's just like every other fandom in having a 90:10 dross to gem rate and
the dross in DW can be truly terrible. It's at times like this that I
half-wish people had to get a licence to publish fanfic, except I'm not sure
that would actually weed out the bad fic because I experience bad drivers
every day and someone somewhere gave all of them licences.
Also, obviously, it would end up being totalitarian state thing and that
would be Bad. It's nice to dream, though :-)
In other thoughts, I've been thinking some more about Stolen Earth.
That shot we had of Donna sitting on the steps in the Shadow Proclamation
building, when she's staring into nothing and we hear a heartbeat, has me
intrigued. There was a hint in Turn Left that she's something the
Trixster hasn't seen before ("What are you? What will you be?") and the
Shadow Proclamation woman says something similar. Her other comment, about
being sorry for her loss that is yet to come, also hints that there is
something about Donna that we don't know yet and it isn't going to be a good
thing for Donna. Damn, I like Donna! She's about one millimetre away from
being joint-favourite companion ever with Ace and I suspect that the next
episode will tip her that millimetre over.
Anyway, here has been a fair bit of speculation about Donna being a
fob-watched Romana. I know that I currently have a WIP called Donna the
Time Lord (I really need a better title), but I don't think that we'll
see that on-screen. Apart from anything else, it's something that they've
already played with in bringing back the Master. As fun as the idea is (and
believe me, I'm having fun with it!) I really don't think that's the answer.
I have absolutely no idea what the answer is, except that at least one of
the characters has said that Donna is something new. Perhaps she is human
but there is something else going on?
It's been so much fun to watch the entire fandom explode over this episode.
Seriously, I had no idea that there could be so many theories and opinions!
How did the Internet survive over the weekend? How did LJ not crash from the
posting frequency? Even post-Rose I don't think there was this much
chatter! This is one of those weeks when I'm so glad that I'm a part of
fandom :-)

Date: 2008-07-01 06:22 pm (UTC)I like the idea that she's part Time Lord, some descendant of the Doctor's perhaps?

Date: 2008-07-01 08:21 pm (UTC)I do think the idea of Donna being part Time Lord is a bit good though.

Date: 2008-07-02 06:45 pm (UTC)*GGG* It is a fun thought!
I'm actually half-hoping she doesn't turn out to be a Time Lord because that would totally Joss my fic. Except I suspect that RTD is evil and therefore my fic might be Joss-ed.
I refuse to stop writing it, though!
My knowledge of the first Doctor era is a wee bit ropey.
As is mine, so I have no way to confirm or deny

Date: 2008-07-01 01:21 pm (UTC)The actor who played him has died, which is why we've now got Wilf instead. I don't think they're going to pull any magic rabbits out of the hat about Dad being a Time Lord, if that's what you were thinking...

Date: 2008-07-02 06:43 pm (UTC)It's an interesting piece of speculation. I'm half-wondering whether she's a cuckoo in the nest thing and the real Donna Noble was killed as a baby.
But then, my brain is odd like that.
I didn't get to see that one
At some stage, you will need to get hold of that one. Her Dad is lovely - I can't work out why he married her mother!
P.S.

How do we know it's Donna who's Romana and not Rose or Martha? Well, perhaps the President of the Council would have a bodyguard?
Wilfred Mott --> Timelord. WTF?

Hee!
