Not the best start to the year

You know that horrible sinking feeling you get when the holidays are over
and you have to go back to work? Well, that was me on New Year's Day. For
the first time I really dreaded going back to work. I have come back to
work, though, and yesterday was surprisingly not too bad. I'm not happy
about the whole being back here thing, but I left at a sensible time
yesterday and didn't have the urge to kill anyone.

Today I have the urge to kill people. At some stage it's going to start
snowing and I'll have to drive home through it. I'm depressed about the
whole job thing and really don't want to be here.

The bit that was the final straw today? My mug has disappeared :-(

I had a lovely thermos flask that my parents gave me the Christmas after I
started here. It's been in the office with me for over eighteen months (um,
yes, it took me a few months to remember to bring it in), sitting on my desk
every day, and nobody had stolen it. Yesterday I was too busy to even make a
cup of tea so I didn't spot that the mug had disappeared until this morning
when I stood up, looked for the mug...and it wasn't there. I didn't take it
home with me before Christmas, nobody has put it into a drawer (we've
checked them all) and it's not lurking on the floor. My lovely mug that my
parents gave me is gone :-(

They gave me a new mug when they came back from their last trip to Canada
with the idea of replacing my office mug (the lid leaked a bit) and I've
been meaning to bring it in, but now I'm not so certain. Surely I can
survive the next...seven months without cups of tea during the day. Right?

Is it time to go home yet? Can I quit yet? Would anyone mind if I spent the
day hiding in the bathroom crying?

Can you not just bring a cheap mug into work for tea? Then it doesn't matter if it gets nicked?

The cheap mug route only works if the cheap mug has a lid - otherwise very little tea actually arrives at my desk still in the mug! I'm extremely bad at carrying mugs of liquid across flat surfaces, never mind up three flights of stairs from the canteen.

Of course, it would be easier if I fell over slightly less often as well.

The mug in question wasn't an expensive mug, it was more about the principle of being unable to leave even a mug on my desk without it getting nicked. Grr.

Maybe you need a USB kettle (not that I think one exists, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time).

In my office going on holiday generally means you have less stationery then you did to start off with, but at least that just means you have to go to the stationery cupboard to get some more. I have had my Lego Yoda nicked, though, which is especially annoying because I've never found one to replace it.

Did you get my email about this weekend?

Kettles are Banned in my office (the capitalisation is important to convey the level of bannedment here). So any kettle, no matter how it is powered, would probably be confiscated very quickly.

Maybe ThinkGeek has a USB one, though?

Poor Lego Yoda! I have a toy London that lives in my desk drawer and I never leave that out on my desk just in case. I don't tend to lock my desk drawers, but at least if it's not on view then it doesn't seem to get stolen. My boss has even stopped nicking my pens because I get so ratty about it :-)

I did get your email and I probably won't be able to make it :-( I've only got about one free weekend between now and the day that I visit Canada next month and there are bits and bobs that I really need to start sorting out. I've been meaning to email you, but it's been so crazy over the last few days.

Do I have to work? It really interferes with things!

I know you can definitely get a USB hoover, so there must be a USB kettle somewhere, or if not there will be soon, I'm sure.

I could do with not working too. I did that today but that's because I'm ill - I could do with not having cotton-wool for brains and not being at work simultaneously...

I will at some point talk to you about dates to come over and visit you in Canada after you've moved out there. My aunt and uncle are coming over from Australia in the autumn, so I first need to know when they're going to be here.

I know if my Tim Horton's one were to disappear there *would* be Trouble... I think I'd have to second the notion to get one you're not too emotionally attached to for you. It is, after all, still a bit chilly out.

Problem is that I need a mug with a lid - the tea stays in the mug better when I fall over!

I'm mostly just annoyed that I can't leave anything on my desk without it getting nicked. It wasn't exactly an expensive mug, even though my parents did give it to me, but it's the principle of the thing. If I get brave and bring in my other lidded mug (and I really feel the need for tea so I may give in) then it will be locked firmly in my desk while not in use. Grr.
