Book meme and fanfic awards
Jun. 14th, 2004 01:48 pmBecause I love books and because I am occasionally a lemming...
( The never-ending book meme )
It goes to show that I read far too much and I can never leave a book unfinished *g*
I've been meaning to post a message/rant (call it what you will) to encourage anyone with even a small interest in Stargate fanfiction to vote in the awards:
Stargate SG-1 Fan Awards 2004
We have some very talented writers, vidders and graphical artists in this fandom. Unfortunately, we also have people putting out complete drivel that somehow manages to get nominated for awards. I'm not going to tell you what to vote for. I couldn't and wouldn't. I'm trusting that there are enough sane, intelligent fans out there to overwhelm the votes of the minority of slightly less sane fans who will vote for the drivel end of the spectrum. Go and look at the site. If you haven't read anything, pick out a few things and read them. Decide what you want to vote for. You don't have to vote in all the awards sections or all the catagories within those sections - if het PWPs aren't your thing, don't worry about voting for something in that catagory. If you like slash novels or gen action/adventures and there are particular stories that you've really enjoyed, go and vote. If you don't vote and the winners aren't the people you feel deserved awards, don't complain about it because you could have added your voice and had a say in where the awards go. The nominations are currently up for reading and voting will begin on 23rd June, ending on 7th July, so there is plenty of time to pick some fics, read 'em and vote. Or just vote for the things you've read during the year and really enjoyed.
For me, it's an honour to be nominated because it means that someone remembered what I've written and felt that it deserved recognition. I doubt that I'll win and I'm perfectly happy about that because I know that my nominations did not come from me campaigning and were a genuine example of someone enjoying my writing. To be honest, if there is even only one person enjoying my stuff then I'm a happy writer. There are a lot of authors, vidders, site owners and graphical artists on that listing who deserve awards and this is our chance, as a fandom, to give something back to them. They work hard throughout the year receiving nothing, apart from the odd bit of feedback, in payment. So if you have had any involvement in the SG on-line world, please go to the awards site and take part.
I had a lot more important stuff to say on the topic, but my mind is still not working properly and most of my incredibly brilliant and coherent post just won't make its way out.
