selenay: (life on mars - sam)

Today is one of those days when they played great songs that always make me smile on the radio ("Nine to Five" by Dolly and "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" by Alan Jackson) and I have got good work to do that's not crazy. I'm feeling good about things.

Life on Mars yesterday made me very happy. The plot was interesting and, although I guessed that it was Miller about half-way through, the joy was in watching how Sam got there and his interaction with Gene. It's probably the most antagonistic I've seen them in a while and it really worked. Particularly Sam being wrong about the bomb, although right about it not being IRA. The contrast between their investigative methods was the real heart of last night's episode and that made it much more interesting than the same plot would be on another show.

I was also interested by Ray and I'm wondering whether his PTSD is something that's going to be addressed again later. I will probably be disappointed if all he needed was to arrest Miller to get over it - they could have a really interesting plot arc if they use it well.

The relationship between Sam and Annie is getting more interesting - she's becoming more assertive and backing him up when she thinks he's onto something and he's starting to need her more. Huh. It's a potentially shippy relationship, but I'm not sure how I'd feel if it became something on-screen. I also have to wonder what's happened to the girlfriend that I seem to recall Sam having (the one who got kidnapped?) in the first episode. Hmm.

No phone-call from the Hyde number this week. Wonder what to make of that? I'm thinking it's a good thing they aren't overusing it - it will probably be a big part of the final couple of eps and it really needs to be used sparingly so that we aren't bored with it by then. I was expecting that final phone call to be the Hyde thing so it was a good surprise when it wasn't.

We're also getting more hints that Sam is starting to recover from his coma (if that's what's really happened), which make sense if the show is going to resolve things for the final episodes. Except I'm still thinking that there's some time travel involved in this, too. Possibly. Hmmm.

All in all, an interesting episode with good plot and lots of lovely character stuff. What am I going to do when there's no more Life on Mars?

In Holby stuff, we need more Dan Clifford and less Jac because she's too irritating for words. And Kyla needs to go. But Fay intrigues me. And why was there no Connie this week?

There's always a possibility of a sequel (which has been running the rumour mill of a couple of months). Wikipedia (being a repository of all knowledge) refers to an article from the Times (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article755667.ece) which may be where it all comes from.

I'd missed 2.3 when it was broadcast on BBC4 the week before Redemption, and then got very confused by the football last week (which meant there was no new episode broadcast on either BBC1 or BBC4). So I downloaded 2.3 via the power of teh Internet. And was eagerly awaiting 2.4 on BBC4. Only to find out the were re-showing 2.2. I have no idea what's going on next week!

Or the BBC's TV listings page (http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/whatson/search/grid.cgi?range=2000&day=Tuesday&medium=tv).

Which has 2.4 on BBC1 at 9pm, followed by 2.3 on BBC4, which seems to be sticking to the "week behind" concept now. Just to annoy me, of course! Maybe showing it a week early was actually impacting on the BBC1 ratings?

I really suspect this was it - plus pressure from the 'Why should those with digital TV have preferential treatment brigade' dispite the fact that (according to some research) over 76% of homes now have either Satalite, Cable or freeview - ie - The Majority ...

"It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" by Alan Jackson

Ah, one of my favourites from CMT's Top 40 Drinking Songs, alongside such classics as All The Girls Get Prettier At Closing Time, I'm Gonna Hire A Wino To Decorate Our Home and You Ain't Much Fun Since I Quit Drinkin'!
