Random blathering
Aug. 18th, 2004 05:45 pmI need a moment to chortle and enjoy watching Jan Ullrich get seventh in the men's time trial this afternoon :-))))) It's not an anti-German thing, it's an anti-wasting-talent thing. Admittedly his racing style has never particularly interested me, but I'd be slightly happier with him if he'd train properly over the winter and not eat everything in sight. In the years when he's trained properly and appeared at races in good condition without having to crash diet to get to racing weight, he's been amazing to watch. And then there's all the years that aren't 1997 and 2003. Guh.
I am very happy to see Tyler Hamilton get gold :-) He's a gutsy rider who keeps going no matter what, even through broken bones, and I love seeing riders like him get the rewards. Seeing Vjatcheslav Ekimov get silver was also great. I can't believe he's still riding and I won't believe that he's finally retiring for at least another five years (come-back king that he is), but if this is his last year then it's great to see him go out on such a high.
It was also fabulous to see Alison Williamson win bronze in the women's archery competition. Go Team GB! I've been inspired :-) I've discovered that there is actually a local archery club (well, I knew this a couple of years ago) and this time I've got further in my research by actually sending an email to inquire about beginners' courses. Er, yes, I have been saying that I'll take up archery for the past ten years. But this time I'm a little closer!
I am so thoroughly geeking on the Olympics this year. It's bizarre because I have always declared that, apart from the cycling and rugby, I'm not a sports fan. I may have to start revising that declaration :-)
I am also craving Chinese food again. It's addictive. I can't just have one Chinese meal. I'm planning the next one within a few hours and thinking about ways to sneak out for lunch when I should have boring, virtuous sandwiches instead. It's been at least a fortnight since I had Chinese food and I was very good at lunch today (aided by the rain because I really didn't fancy getting soaked even if there was Chinese food as a reward), but I can feel the craving building...
