Oct. 24th, 2006 03:17 pmSlightly more coherent thoughts this time.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. The episodes weren't perfect, but I really enjoyed them and they've set things up for some really good TV (hopefully!).
The first episode, Everything Changes, was very much about explaining the set-up and introducing the characters. That said, the plot twist with Suzie was very well done and the last thing that I expected. I'd managed to avoid spoilers and all the promo material indicated that she was going to be main regular, so it came as a complete surprise. Even after she pulled out a gun, I was half-convinced that she'd be given a way to redeem herself because you just don't kill a main character in the first episode.
I'm going to be more worried about the characters now because this doesn't seem to be the kind of show where people are 'safe'.
Obviously, I squeed loudly at seeing Captain Jack :-)
That first shot of the Torchwood team striding through the rain was very cool.
So far, I'm pretty sure that I like Gwen, obviously adore Jack, definitely like Tosh (sp?), want to know more about Ianto but like him and kind of half like Owen, half want to punch his lights out. So I'm about where I usually am with an ensemble thing and I'm looking forward to finding out more about the characters.
I've heard mixed comments about Day One. It probably wasn't the slickest thing ever, but I think it was intended to establish that this is an adults show, not for kids, more than anything else. I'm half reminded of the first two episodes of the new Doctor Who - Rose established our characters and End of the World established what we might be able to expect. Things didn't really get going until the third episode, which was a much better production and a far better indication of the quality we'd expect. The promos for next week's episodes look very good, nicely spooky with hopefully a good plot.
I enjoyed Day One for the flashes of humour, though. Captain Jack still gets the best lines :-) And I like the speculation about who (or what) he is - the tone of it was just right.
I'm looking forward to finding out how Jack got there. I'm currently going with the current explanation that Rose caused his immortality and the severed hand had to be the Doctor's from TCI, but how he got from 200,000 years into the future to modern Cardiff and why he's still there is going to be interesting. He seems darker than the Jack we last saw. I'm not sure it's anger necessarily, but something has changed.
There's plenty to keep me watching and I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops over the weeks.
And, um, am I crazy to be leaning in a Jack/Ianto direction?
May I just say that I'm very pleased that BBC2 is airing it on Wednesdays? If everything goes wrong with videoing (or I can't justify staying up that late on a Sunday...) then there's another option :-) The BBC is very nice that way. Although airing the documentaries at a stupid time on a Sunday isn't so kind.
Now I need to make myself some Torchwood icons :-)

Date: 2006-10-24 06:06 pm (UTC)Oh, so that's why people are upset. I was still trying to work out how she was at that point.
And yes, it is Wednesdays. And on BB3 again on Fridays.
The documentaries are on the website (if you look under the Autopsy link) but I watched them both and they really don't tell you anything, so I might not bother. I felt so sure that since Declassifieds were 10 mins and the eps finish at 10 to the hour, that's the obvious time to show them. Apparently not.

Date: 2006-10-24 06:13 pm (UTC)Yup. Even the profile of her in the Radio Times was discussing her in the context of being a regular. I thought it was a good idea, personally, because now we'll have to be more concerned about them all.
I may have accidentally downloaded the documentaries from somewhere already *sheepish grin* Didn't realise they were on the website. Um, I'll be watching them when I've got some time this week because I'm a sad sap :-)

Date: 2006-10-24 08:11 pm (UTC)I didn't think the killing off a regular early on was that exciting because Spooks did it in their second episode, so since then it's sort of become the thing you do.

Date: 2006-10-25 09:28 am (UTC)Killing off a regular early on may be getting more common, but they don't usually turn out to be murderers as well :-) I thought that made an interesting twist. And there was no indication in the Radio Times that she wasn't going to be a regular. I don't recall the Spooks character being advertised as part of the regulars in the same way, although I might be wrong :-)

I don't remember anything about the beginning of Spooks, and I didn't really concentrate on the second episode that much, so I wasn't quite as shocked as everyone else. Actually, that seems to be a bit of theme...
