Oct. 4th, 2006 02:03 pmSomehow, I feel that my endevours to finish the Big Bad Project before I go on holiday would be going much better if all the IT systems hadn't ground to a total halt and the IT helpdesk in India wasn't on strike today.
They've got a recorded message that helpfully asks us to call back tomorrow. Huh.
Code that usually takes five seconds to run is taking ten minutes and I really wanted to get some things done today.
I am plugged into my iPod and hoping that things improve quickly. Except Excel has just frozen on me and I helpfully haven't saved since before lunch. Grrr.
But it's only four days until my holiday :-)
I am trying to think of something to say, perhaps a commentary on the current sponsered communities kerfluffle, but I have no intelligent thoughts. Oh, well.

I've missed this entirely, how is it different from the ordinary sponsored account level?

Date: 2006-10-06 08:53 am (UTC)Obviously, everyone is turning into Chicken Licken again and predicting the end of LJ as we know it and the death of fandom now those evil companies can access LJ. Except they've got no more power than the rest of us to dictate what actually happens in a community that we're not the moderator of. So it's a little pointless. LJ is also introducing some new features that will be sponsered by companies - but they aren't going to have advertising or change how any of the current features work. We won't be forced to use sponsered things and they'll be "discrete" apparently.
I'm looking at it as yet another pointless overreaction to change that probably won't affect us at all. The same fuss was made over the change to the navigation, the introduction of Plus accounts and the launch of Vox. None of which have killed or particularly changed LJ.

Date: 2006-10-06 09:26 am (UTC)Any reaction at all is definitely an overreaction - anyone at all can create an LJ account and community, so there's nothing to stop companies from doing it already. They could be right now for all we know.
Now I'm used to it, I really like the new navigation, except for the links above the main navigation which are sort of hidden behind it.

Date: 2006-10-06 08:40 pm (UTC)I would be surprised if they hadn't. I think that this makes it more transparent - any company or company spokesperson that sets up an LJ must now set it up as a sponsored account (which will be clearly marked as such) and/or declare their company affiliation. Breaking that rule will get them banned. To me, it makes the whole thing more trasparent.
Um, the links above the main navigation aren't hidden for me...
Your computer really does some strange things to websites!

Date: 2006-10-06 09:09 pm (UTC)Think that's a point we should add to the panel at Redemption? "Sometimes, no matter how carefully a website is constructed, there will be one user who's computer doesn't display it right..."
I need to start looking out for examples of really dreadfully presented fansites :-) And also some examples of good fansites as the contrast!

Date: 2006-10-06 09:39 pm (UTC)And it'll be mine :) Seriously, I don't know what it is about my computer, it's just crazy.
Good fansites are easier to dredge out of the memory than bad ones - because the bad ones I don't go back to.
