Hmmm. Not to sure about that, although the love of libraries and the stubbornness do fit.
The picnic in Hyde Park went swimmingly. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we lost track of time completely, which indicates that it nobody was bored or uncomfortable. Nobody attacked
paranoidangel42 for being a shipper and we did much bashing of a certain BeagleFic writer *g*
The Stargate Fanfic Awards have been announced. I didn't win anything, which I'm not surprised about, and many deserving authors did win - congratulations to
riverfox,
dmouse,
alyburns,
thegrrrl2002,
minkyboylove et al. While I can possibly disagree with a couple of the wins, no BeagleFic won and I am very happy about that :-) My favourite Sam/Janet fic won the best Sam/Janet category, which made me very happy,
thegrrrl2002 got a well-deserved best new author (because she is one of the bright new stars of the year) and there was no award that had me screaming at the screen. They've even put up a survey on the site so that we can give feedback on the areas that worked and didn't work for next year's awards. With the controversy over lumping BDSM and rape fic together this year, I think it's important for anyone who feels strongly about it to fill in the survey and say so. If enough people register their unhappiness about it, hopefully next year this won't happen. I have :-)
In shocking news, I may have found a pairing that I simply cannot read. While the idea of Kinsey/anyone squicks me thoroughly, I never thought that there would be a pairing that I'd find so completely unlikely I couldn't read any fic based on it without giggling hopelessly. I've finally found it: Kirk/Spock. I tried, I really did. I feel like a blasphemous slasher for not being able to read the original slash fandom. I made it three quarters of the way through a Kirk/Spock fic, reached the love scene, and simply couldn't continue. I think, though, that it proves that I'm not the kind of slasher who will read anything with two men (or two women) gettin' it on. I like to read certain characters and pairings because they appeal to me. And it's not that I'll read about any set of characters I like because I do adore Star Trek:TOS characters. There is a difference between characters that I like and characters that I can slash. I feel somewhat less like a slash slut now because I've finally found a limit beyond just 'eww squick'.
Lastly, I found this on another site and had to pass it on for the Mercedes Lackey fans (yo,
kymber!) because, as much as I adore her books, she really does have a habit of dropping mountains on her characters :-) Don't read if you're afraid of spoilers for the books, but it is fun.

Date: 2004-08-10 01:26 pm (UTC)Hee! I like to think of it as being open to any new experience. Which does sort of translate into 'slash slut who will read anything'. Maybe someday I'll be able to give K/S a try.
And thank you, it was really amazing to have won, there are so many wonderful authors out there. Glad you enjoyed those last two smutfests. Very self-indulgent of me, but I just couldn't resist the premise. *g*

Date: 2004-08-09 09:13 pm (UTC)Are you into a variety of fantasy? I've joined a couple of LJ's for Robin McKinley and for fantasy in general. They could do with a few more posters. :hint:

Date: 2004-08-10 10:39 am (UTC)I'm into a variety of fantasy, yes. Haven't read Robin McKinley yet (I have a long list of books and authors to read, which is insane when you know how many books I already have and love), but I'm always on the look out for interesting communities about the kinds of books that I love.
