Still alive!
Jul. 20th, 2006 12:50 pm*waves* I'm still alive out here! Just...
So it turns out that a migraine on the hottest day of the year so far
is a really stupid plan. Who knew?
And who transported the UK to the tropics? 'Cos 37C is really way too
hot. Totally. Thankfully I'm back at work where they have nice,
cooling air conditioning. OK, so I'm also facing the usual crap and
insanity, but I'll put up with that for the value of not roasting to
death.
My unexpected absense pointed out the holes in our disaster recovery plan.
Um, there isn't one.
I.e. if I'm not here, nobody knows what I do. Nobody has wanted to
know what I do even though I've been pointing out for months that this
is a bad plan, but now they've decided that they probably need to know
after all. Particularly as it's just ocurring to a few of the bosses
that I will be on holiday in a couple of weeks and nobody knows how to
do my Monday/Tuesday insanity work. They've been lucky so far that
I've always made it on Monday and Tuesday, so nobody has noticed how
much I'm doing or how poorly prepared they are for my absence. I've
been promised the aid of the new guy so hopefully I can get him up to
speed to be my backup before I go.
I have Chinese food cravings but it's way too hot for those. Pout.

Date: 2006-07-20 12:07 pm (UTC)I'm facing something similar at the moment. With the prospect of the dept. being only 50% staffed, it means that there will be no one to proof urgent jobs for a couple of hours a day, which means they won't go out within the required timeframe. Da Big Boss has now spent just over a week 'thinking' about a new 'strategy', but has been distracted due to the extreme sycophancy required while Da Mega Boss is over from NY... sigh...

Date: 2006-07-20 12:57 pm (UTC)Your situation sounds just as helpful *sigh* Why is that bosses never think about this stuff and leave the front line folks to worry and stress? And why are they always the first ones to yell when things don't happen, even though it's their fault that there is no backup capacity? Grah!

Date: 2006-07-21 04:45 am (UTC)It's hot here too. It was 105 today, I have no idea what that is in weird numbers, but I'm sure you do!! I don't let the little one's out when the sun's up, they fry so easy. Madelyn was mad at me b/c she wants to jump on the trampoline in the sprinker and just doesn't understand why she can't. Poor baby!
I hope that they get your work situation sorted fairly soon. I know how it feels to be the only one who knows how things run!

Date: 2006-07-21 10:17 am (UTC)Good for you! Go girl! It's always worth going back to school if you can - I hate to be all preachy, but you can never get too much education. What kind of thing are you thinking about studying?
You would be so proud of me! :)
I am, sweetie, very much :-))

Well, 101 is 37.5C so 105 is probably around 39C. That is way too hot and evil. Definitely the weather to keep kids indoors and smother them in sunblock if you do have to take them out. Poor Madelyn, but she'd be thoroughly miserable with heat stroke so you're doing the right thing.

Wow, that sounds familiar. Not for me, thinkfully, although I dread to think what might have gone on in my absence last week, but from other people. My dad told work a year in advance that he was leaving and as far as I know they still don't have anyone to teach his classes in September.
On The Avengers front, BBC4 are repeating the Emma Peel black & white series at 7.10 Thursdays, although next week it's Monday-Thursday, not sure whether they'll keep that one up or not. Which should save you a few DVDs on your rental list (My record so far is 80 :)). I watched Wednesay's episode last night and it was very good.
