Interesting day

I found my way to the new office - go me! All my stuff made it to my new office - yay! This is particularly good because my stuff includes some personal items (books, box of tea, bar of chocolate, Atlantis coaster...) that I wouldn't have wanted to lose.

The day was pretty exhausting and the new painkillers definitely aren't keeping me pain free, but it's a case of 3 to 4 on a scale of 10 as opposed to a 9, which is where I was precisely a week ago. The only annoying side-effects from these painkillers are a slight taste in my mouth and a tendency towards grogginess in the afternoon. Much better than the previous batch. I don't want to be doing this commute for a great length of time, though, because I can tell that it's not doing my back any favours.

To that end, I've had an amazing six recruiters call about my CV after having it on a couple of job sites for 24 hours. This is rather surprising and pleasing. Of those, one job sounded very interesting and I've written back to the recruiter already. I had a chat with another recruiter about a position that's interviewing on Thursday, but have decided to turn it down. The commute was still fairly long and the position wasn't even close to ideal. With this much interest so quickly, I think that I can afford to only go for positions that I'm really interested in. Financially, I'm good, and the current job is going to kill me, at least for another couple of months. I want something that's right this time. And there's no point taking time out from my current job for interviews for jobs that I'm already sure won't be right.

Now I will have a quick lie down and enjoy my bad medical dramas while recovering from the first day.

I'm a very sad addict :-( They're good relaxation fodder because they require very little brain power, perfect after a long day at work, and are melodramatic enough to be a lot of fun :-)

Do you want honesty or should I make nice? Because I can see a number of problems with it from a code point of view from a short buzz through and the design could do with a bit of sprucing up. I'd be interested to know what you (and possibly the band) think are issues, too.

I probably could do a better job :-) Although I'm not a Flash gal so I couldn't do anything with the header graphic. But structurally, there's a lot that could be improved and those improvements would probably give the site a more professional look (and possibly help it up the search engine rankings...)

That's really depressing (but good for you, obviously). I'm feeling resigned to being stuck in my job forever because I'm just not getting anywhere.

Don't be too depressed - no contacts today, although I've had a call back from an angecy that I left a message with yesterday who sounded quite positive. And I did spot a good position in town that I've applied for. Things will probably slow down after that initial surge.

Although obviously it would be fabulous if someone called tomorrow and offered me a perfect job :-)

I'm quite excited now because I have an interview! The company wanted someone with Access and Excel experience, and I truthfully told the recruitment agency I have no experience with Access at all. Yet they want to interview me. They must be desperate!

Yay you!! They probably aren't desperate - they recognise that you have fabulous skills in most of the relevant areas and want to talk to you to find out whether you'll fit into the company and be worth training in areas such as Access. Plus you're already familiar with Excel and writing VBA, which will give you a head start in learning Access, and they recognise that the learning curve in Access won't be as steep for you as it would be with many other candidates.

At least, that would be my take on it if I were the person interviewing you :-)

Speaking realisticly (however I spell that it doesn't look right. I blame Doctor Who), yes, you're right about the whole learning the skills thing. But if they had someone who knew Access they wouldn't call on me.

The one good thing I've been learning in the last year, because of which office I've been sat in, is that they never interview anyone who they think could do the job.
