SG1 - Avalon: A brief squee
Oct. 12th, 2005 04:02 pmSquee!
I have been pleasantly surprised by just how much I enjoyed this episode. It was actually...fun. I like Cameron - enthusiasm and all. Quite different from Jack, which the role needed. As much as I love Jack, trying to slide in a JackClone character would have killed the show. There's going to be a new team dynamic here and I like what I've seen so far.
I know that Valla won't be in every episode, but she's a great addition here. Somehow I like her more than I did in last year's episode and I know that it's not just *that* costume. Maybe it's because she's kept all the traits that I liked about her, but the slapstick has been pulled. The chemistry between her and Daniel is great - he doesn't trust her an inch, she has very few morals and only slightly more ethics, they're both trying to get the better of each other and instead digging themselves into deep, deep holes.
I'm intrigued by Cameron's backstory. I like the fact that he isn't new to the Stargate program and he requested the SG-1 assignment. The whole thing with the crash and injuries will hopefully make for an interesting character and won't be forgotten about as soon as this episode is over.
With all the introductions and resetting, the main plot didn't get a massive amount of development but it was enough to keep my interest and set up some great stuff for the next episode. The cliff-hanger was obvious the moment they walked into little rooms with doors that closed mysteriously, but it's a classic kind of cliff-hanger for good reasons.
In all, I really enjoyed this episode and it's got me excited about what the rest of the season may be, which is what really needed to happen. Next week it's the premier of Atlantis and I'm feeling the Stargate love again after a few months of 'meh' thoughts.

Date: 2005-10-12 03:42 pm (UTC)I love Cameron, although he's a lot like Crichton, but I can live with that ;o) I agree that it was good they didn't make him like Jack. It wouldn't have worked on any level. Claudia seems to have made Michael raise his game the way that Rick used to, and although Jack and Daniel are still shagging like bunnies I'm loving the banter. I'd like to think there's a good amount of improv going on.
It's made me feel the Stargate love too. After not really caring whether I saw it or not, I'm now looking forward to next Tuesday. And the beard. Dear God, the beard...

Not having been a Farscape fan, I get to miss out all the details like that.

I hadn't thought about it like that, but I can definitely see what you mean. The scenes with her in seem to have something extra that's missing from other scenes - Michael has probably realised that he needs to put out his best just to match her work.

With you all the way there :-)
Dear God, the beard...

Date: 2005-10-13 05:04 pm (UTC)The only moment that didn't work for me, unfortunately, was Jack's scene. It felt like RDA phoned in his performance as a final favour rather than actually putting life in it, which was disappointing. Still, I can see this season being fun because there are new actors with different characters and our familiar guys will have to work that bit harder to keep from being overshadowed.

I like Mitchell, but he's a little too laid back for me to have developed more than a gentle affection for him. Vala is wonderful, but perhaps best in small doses! *g*
