In which I babble
Mar. 28th, 2012 10:23 pmThere was an article in the last couple of days decrying the salt/sodium content in takeaway pizza. I wasn't taking it too seriously - it's an occasional treat so why the hell should I care about the sodium?
Then I dipped into the comments and there were dozens of people advocating the joys of making their own and never buying a takeaway pizza. At which point I felt they may have missed the point of takeout. I can (and do) make my own pizzas. It's a satisfying thing to do. However, it's also time consuming and not always my preference. More often, if I want pizza then I buy a frozen one at the store. There are times, though, when only takeout will do:
1) When I've had an unusually exhausting, super-busy day, I can't stand the thought of cooking and there are no emergency pizzas in my freezer.
2) When I'm so completely absorbed in a book that taking the time to sort out a frozen pizza is just not going to happen and it's far easier (and more satisfying) to pick up the phone
Option 1 happens maybe three or four times a year, option 2 happens a couple of times a year. I don't think it's going to kill me and does anyone think that making my own pizza is going to work in either circumstance?
Sorry, had to get that off my chest.
I'd totally order sushi or Thai or some other kind of takeout if I any of them delivered. Sadly, I'm out of range for everything except one pizza place. Woe. My biggest first world problem: lack of delivery options.
In other news...
The Pottermore shop is now open so I can buy Harry for my Kindle. Guess who's going to be doing a complete Harry re-read soon? *bounces*
Of course, first I have to finish the Hunger Games trilogy. It's not like I'm obsessed with reading them or anything...

Date: 2012-03-29 11:01 pm (UTC)I don't do delivery, mostly because I almost always eat lunch out (and the places I'd get delivery from are the places I eat lunch at) and because leftovers tend to sit in my fridge until they go bad. If I don't feel like cooking I can run across the street to Boston Market for takeout but I'm more likely to fall back on boxed pasta with canned sauce or canned soup, neither of which require much brainpower.

Date: 2012-03-31 02:02 pm (UTC)What I can make tastes ok, but the frozen ones and the delivery ones taste much better. Every now and again I have days when even the though of cooking pasta and heating sauce is too much to cope with. Soup won't cut it so that's when I treat myself to pizza. So far this year, I've done it once. That's how often it happens :-)

Date: 2012-04-02 09:31 pm (UTC)I can on a good day manage a whole frozen one, if it's a thin crust. Getting two meals out of a take away one makes me feel better about the expense.
Eating my main meal at work just isn't practical or affordable.

Date: 2012-04-02 09:44 pm (UTC)Eating out is a splurge for me, but I economize in other ways, and when I was trying to bring my lunch, I would either stress myself out over it (speaking of uncoping), forget my lunch or decide I wanted something else instead. But then I work in an area with about 8-10 good restaurants in the half a mile between the library and the train station with some cheap options among them. If I get in my car and drive a mile or two, I can add another half a dozen choices including going home for lunch. Not everyone has my options.
