There was an article in the last couple of days decrying the salt/sodium content in takeaway pizza. I wasn't taking it too seriously - it's an occasional treat so why the hell should I care about the sodium?

Then I dipped into the comments and there were dozens of people advocating the joys of making their own and never buying a takeaway pizza. At which point I felt they may have missed the point of takeout. I can (and do) make my own pizzas. It's a satisfying thing to do. However, it's also time consuming and not always my preference. More often, if I want pizza then I buy a frozen one at the store. There are times, though, when only takeout will do:

1) When I've had an unusually exhausting, super-busy day, I can't stand the thought of cooking and there are no emergency pizzas in my freezer.

2) When I'm so completely absorbed in a book that taking the time to sort out a frozen pizza is just not going to happen and it's far easier (and more satisfying) to pick up the phone

Option 1 happens maybe three or four times a year, option 2 happens a couple of times a year. I don't think it's going to kill me and does anyone think that making my own pizza is going to work in either circumstance?

Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

I'd totally order sushi or Thai or some other kind of takeout if I any of them delivered. Sadly, I'm out of range for everything except one pizza place. Woe. My biggest first world problem: lack of delivery options.

In other news...

The Pottermore shop is now open so I can buy Harry for my Kindle. Guess who's going to be doing a complete Harry re-read soon? *bounces*

Of course, first I have to finish the Hunger Games trilogy. It's not like I'm obsessed with reading them or anything...

New York style pizza (which is what I was raised on) cannot be duplicated at home. Not by frozen, not by homemade - not without retrofitting an oven that probably wouldn't be allowed in a residence. Yes, I do sometimes make pizza-ish foods (more often on an English muffin than proper pizza dough), but if I'm craving pizza, I go to the local pizza place at lunch.

I don't do delivery, mostly because I almost always eat lunch out (and the places I'd get delivery from are the places I eat lunch at) and because leftovers tend to sit in my fridge until they go bad. If I don't feel like cooking I can run across the street to Boston Market for takeout but I'm more likely to fall back on boxed pasta with canned sauce or canned soup, neither of which require much brainpower.

That's about how often I resort to Boston Market. :) I do eat my main meal at lunch (we have some amazing restaurants in walking distance of the library and lunch is much cheaper than dinner). And yes, I'd probably choose frozen over homemade if those are my only options, mostly because homemade makes too much for me and unlike many people I rarely reheat pizza (or eat it cold).

If I were going to buy frozen pizza, it's easy to get individually sized ones around here.

Eating out is a splurge for me, but I economize in other ways, and when I was trying to bring my lunch, I would either stress myself out over it (speaking of uncoping), forget my lunch or decide I wanted something else instead. But then I work in an area with about 8-10 good restaurants in the half a mile between the library and the train station with some cheap options among them. If I get in my car and drive a mile or two, I can add another half a dozen choices including going home for lunch. Not everyone has my options.

We've got both of those too and many of my coworkers bring their lunches. On rare occasions I do too. My real problem with bringing lunch is that I'll start off with homemade soups and stews and then devolve into pb&j, tunafish, or prepackaged soup. I know from experience that I'm not very good at packing lunch. I do envy people who have their act together enough to pack healthy and interesting lunches.
