Getting there...
Jun. 21st, 2010 12:05 pmI know that I have said this a number of times, but my bosses are lovely. They've got no problems with me working from home for the rest of the week ("do whatever you need to do to get through this") and they're looking into whether I'm entitled to any bereavement leave if there are days when working at home is just too chaotic.
One of them is even going through the same legal nightmare that we're starting on with my uncle's refusal to make a will.
I'm not going to pretend that everything is suddenly happy and rosy, but being sorted out and supported at work helps a huge amount with the stress. It should also relieve Mum a bit, because now she can focus on the next few days without worrying about the impact of this on my job.
Lowering my stress levels is important because I have my bi-annual cardiology check-up this afternoon. Going in there with sky-high blood pressure may not be the best way of proving that my heart is OK!
Provided he doesn't flake out, my cousin is coming to fetch me from the car repair place when I drop the car off tomorrow morning. So no need to shell out for a cab home. Then I'm going to be at home (no escape! just me and three cats plus assorted workmen!) until the car is ready to be picked up. Can anyone say cabin fever?
The contractor is patching the floor-level holes today, so there's no way any cats can get themselves stuck in walls, and he's giving us some big plywood boards to try to block off the kitchen from them. I'm planning to shut the cats away when I'm actively cooking supper to reduce the risk of them getting in there and Mum is cat (and kitten) proofing the house today. The contractor has promised to keep an eye on what he and his people do, so that the cats don't escape and/or get hurt when they're working.
The flights are booked, the transport from Winnipeg is sorted, the funeral is scheduled and the lawyers today should be giving us an idea of what level of legal nightmare we're facing. Make wills, people! Your family will swear at you a lot less!
