I'm doing that thing other people do that always make me jealous: I am posting from my gate at the airport.

It's the little things that make me happy.

But anyway. I'm at my gate! I'm going to the UK! Via Boston! And US Customs are scary! And I got selected for extra security screening!

I got here insanely early, due to my over preparation habits. My car is staying at a hotel while I'm away, partially so that I can stay there the night I get back (I hate driving the airport highway in the dark and don't want to risk the weather) and partially so that my drive can be ploughed while I'm gone. So I had to drop the car off and get hotel transport to take me to the airport. It went far smoother than expected, which is why I'm here so early. Ah, well. I know for the future :-)

Although I'm safely checked in and waiting, I don't think that I'll feel happy and relaxed until I'm on my flight to London, mid-Atlantic, and there is no chance that I'll get stuck in Boston. The Customs guy wanted to know whether I was OK financially to get stuck in the airport there. Comforting.

So, I'm going to work on editing my Yuletide and wait for my gate to be called. Eee!

Unless you're flying out of Boston tomorrow, you should be safe. The snow isn't supposed to start here until around 10am, so it wouldn't reach Boston until noon tomorrow.

Also, unlike London, they know how to deal with snow. ;)

Of course I blame you and your previous 'it doesn't snow in London a Christmas' post entirely for the fact that my driving test got postponed yesterday... We've had none overnight but it has been colder (not entire surface of canal frozen cold, only about half way across) but that shouldn't be a problem.

Boston can get snow for six months of the year, apparently, if you include a touch in April, which we've not seen in the south east of England since I the early eighties (and that was unusual even then). London gets maybe six inches or so and it's all gone inside 2-3 days, which might explain the relative level of preparedness! Most people are happy having a couple of days off, or working from home. The problems come from those who insist on carrying on exactly as if nothing had happened (including driving just as badly, not allowing any extra time to travel, etc). The weather forecast was spot on for the first bit, although I think we were supposed to have some more yesterday or last night and that didn't appear.

I do have sympathy for the people trapped in the Channel Tunnel though. That's mismanagement and incompetence on a huge scale.

My mum emailed to warn me. I decided to bring my snow boots after initially planning to leave them in the car - good decision, I think.

I had no idea that storm was on its way until people in Boston were starting to talk about flight to Washington being cancelled! So glad that I flew yesterday rather than today.

The snow clearance here is non existent. It's pretty, but a bit dangerous. Ah, well, it's what I expect for England :-)

I apologise profusely for that blog entry. I had no idea what I'd cause!

Mum emailed me yesterday to tell me what had happened so I popped my snow boots in the case rather than leaving them in the car. Good decision. It was about what I expected from her description and the BBC News site, but not nice. Why can't people learn to drive sensibly in the snow? You've not got bloody snow tires on the car! I appreciate Canadian snow ploughs so much and I love my snow tires.

The Channel Tunnel thing is just crazy.

:) This is why I don't like to go south during the winter. At least I'm far enough north that they know how to deal with snow.

But they keep pushing the storm back. Now it's supposed to get here around 3pm.

What I'm most worried about at the moment is that I'm flying to Sacramento via Denver right after New Year's for my brother's wedding. Talk about being potentially snowed in.
