Need advice from Canadian f-listers
Jul. 9th, 2008 03:28 pmIn exactly one month I shall be standing in immigration at the airport
hoping that the embassy was correct that I have all my paperwork (the three
times I called and checked). In other words, it is exactly one month until
my emigration. Yay!
To that end, I need some advice. Specifically advice on my choice of cable
supplier.
It seems like the most cost efficient thing is to have cable, telephone and
Internet (DSL/Cable) bundled from one supplier. However, I know from
experience that not all companies are equal (BT has strangled my torrents
for over two years - thank you). So does anyone have any particular
companies they'd recommend? Advise strongly against? I've heard a lot of bad
things about Rogers over the years, for example: is that justified? And Bell
seems to be getting pounded for strangling some types of Internet traffic,
which I definitely don't want! Has anyone had geniune Bell problems?
I'm going to be in Nova Scotia and I know that I can also get Shaw and
possibly Alliant there - any opinions good or bad? Any others that I should
investigate to see whether they work in my area?
So many things to think about! And obviously my cable - therefore my
Internet - supplier is the most important :-)

Date: 2008-07-09 02:58 pm (UTC)We're with Shaw, which seems to be the best of the bunch, but we're also in Alberta (for now), so I don't know how their service is in the Maritimes. I don't know if you get Telus out there, but if you do, avoid it like the plague.

Date: 2008-07-09 08:08 pm (UTC)*g* I've spent the last five years dealing with BT, who randomly drop my Internet connection at regular intervals, refuse to let me download torrents and have been known to disable our telephone line with no explanation whatsoever. So I assume suckiness :-)
Shaw used to be in the Maritimes, but I just checked and they no longer serve us :-( Drat, because they looked pretty good! I'm leaning towards Eastlink at the moment (my aunt uses them and they seem relatively decent) with possibly a separate plan set up for my long distance.
Everything else is proving to be easier than expected, but choosing a cable/Internet company? Now that's scary!
