I have a question for my fellow geeks and techies. [livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42 is standing next to me and would also love to hear the answer :-)

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good online RSS reader? I've been using Google Reader which is very nice, but doesn't let me subscribe to friends only LJ feeds. It apparently can't understand the auth=digest concept and tells me the feed doesn't exist :-( If anyone could give me some recs, that would be magnificent and I would probably declare you a star of wonderful proportions.

PA says hello :-) Did you know that it's entirely possible for two fans to talk Doctor Who for two hours solid without noticing?

I'd like to hear the answer myself. I've been using google reader too, and I'd love to find something better.

Hello! (Wadj waves)

Glad you're having a good visit. It doesn't surprise me a bit that two fans can talk DW or TW for that matter, for hours and not realise.

One of the houses down our street is called Touchwood.

That's not what I saw when I went past!

I'm not sure I like the look of it as much as Google Reader, but Newsgator gives you the option to add your credentials to a feed - ie your LJ username and password

After a bit of comparison shopping, I'd installed Feed Reader (http://www.feedreader.com/). It's probably not the greatest in looks, but it does give me what I want. :)

ETA: Oops. You said *online*. My bad. I'll blame the cramps. *g*

My main question is if it's faster. google tends to go all sluggish on me at times (and it doesn't handle embedded video well).

I don't use it for lj (which I prefer to read via friendslist), but I have at least a hundred feeds I follow.

I was thinking of using it for my RP feeds, so if I can tear myself away from my blog, I will add my feeds to it and see how fast it is. Although I don't know how fast Google Reader is, and my main RSS Reader is offline, which will make a difference.

I might experiment with it at some point, but I'll wait and see how it does for you.

{{{{{{ hugs back }}}}}}} Not too bad this month, thanks, but the only thing I seem to be able to concentrate on is writing, which is amusing. *g* Hope you're feeling better today?

I have found some more interesting stuff about this.

If you put auth=yes instead of auth=digest to the end of the RSS link (where the RSS link is eg http://paranoidangel42.livejournal.com/data/rss) then Google Reader likes it. But doesn't know your username or password, so that's unhelpful.

According to one of the commenters on this blog you can add your username and password into that address. But not even Firefox likes that, never mind Google Reader.

However, I have found a site called FreeMyFeed where you type in the address, add in your username and password and it gives you a long address which you can add into Google Reader, and that definitely works because I tried it.

However, at the place where I saw about it, one commenter said not to use it with Gmail unread messages (I don't know if that means Google Reader or not) and another said it doesn't work with Livejournal.

Interestingly, I added some feeds to Google Reader and couldn't work out why it didn't tell me who the poster was on the comms. The feeds I added were RSS feeds, but if I change them to atom feeds, they do. I'll have to see if that works on my offline reader too, but it's worth changing that part of the addresses of rss feeds (at least for comms) from rss to atom.
