Finally some Stargate squeeing
Oct. 22nd, 2004 10:55 amYesterday was a good day. I actually managed to write some of my project report, but that wasn't what made it a good day. The good part came in the evening - everyone went out, leaving me with an empty house for a few hours. Woo!
I made good use of my time :-) There was the inevitable celebratory Chinese food. 'Cos I couldn't resist the lure. And then I caught up on my TV watching.
First up came The Bill. Which I enjoyed. Ding dong, the witch is dead... Kerry finally met her end and I am so happy. Admittedly, I could have done without poor Smiffy declaring his undying love so that Kerry could die in his arms and the writers can try to write him out, but even that couldn't wipe out the sheer joy of Kerry finally being gone. It wasn't quite the fiery death that I'd hoped for (they couldn't have let her die in either of the two recent bomb blasts?), but there was another bonus. A couple of days ago I was considering the possibility of Gabriele killing her so that they'd write out my two least favourite characters (and storylines) in one fell swoop. Guess who killed Kerry? Score! Wonder how long it will take them to figure it out?
Mind you, this is the show where they had psycho-Cathy for two years before anyone at the station figured out she was a homicidal maniac. Maybe I shouldn't start celebrating yet...
After that, I had two weeks worth of Stargate and Atlantis saved up to watch. Four hours of Stargatey goodness and I couldn't resist :-)
The Stargate was fun. Interfacing with the Daniel Jackson. Some great lines in there, both episodes, and several scenes with Jack and Daniel interacting. Damn, I'd missed that :-) I could probably pick both episodes to bits if I was that way inclined, but right now I'm basking in the afterglow of new Stargate so I won't. There were a couple of places where I lost track (did Thor blow up the mothership that the Goa'uld sent to Earth? Did I miss that bit?), possibly where they'd cut scenes for time without realising that it obscured plot points, but nothing too major. Lockdown showed a us a little of how unprepared Jack was to become a general, but I have confidence that he'll grow into the role if the writers let him. The floaty-Anubis plot made sense to me and I just knew that it was too much to expect that one to be dead yet. Camulus should make an interesting character and my stupid brain was already coming up with PBs that have been shot before I could end up with any more unfinished fics.
All of this was incredibly disjointed, but that's what happens when I watch two eps in a row late at night and attempt to comment on them :-)
And then I had the two-part opener for Atlantis, which I enjoyed greatly. I have a feeling that I'm going to enjoy this show as much as I do Stargate. I went in with an open mind, hoping that I'd like it but prepared to be a little 'meh' if it wasn't what I'd expected. I'm so glad that I like it :-) The Wraith were suitably creepy and I hope that is kept up for a while. I like the characters. Even the new Elizabeth has grown on me, enough that I'm already attempting to pair her with Teyla even though they haven't had a scene together yet. Teyla was the one character that I thought I'd dislike, but I absolutely don't. If they attempt to blatently match her with Sheppard then I might get grouchy with her, but I like her.
MacKay is already one of my favourites :-) I can absolutely see the Sheppard/MacKay pairing, although it's going to take me a few more episodes before I can judge how good the fic for them is. MacKay has the right level of arrogant confidence in his own intelligence and social insecurity, his snark is going to be so fun and he has great potential. Sheppard is quite a contrast, but in a good way, and he has the potential to be a fab character. I can't comment too much on Ford at the moment because...er...very little screen-time to work with. Carson is whiny, funny, geeky and has a convincing accent. Another one with potential, although I think he's going to need a couple of eps to get a handle on.
Love, love, love the sets. Beautiful.
To sum up, I enjoyed the opener and this series has a lot of potential in it. I think that's what I'm really excited about - the incredible potential in the characters and situation. Two hours isn't enough to judge whether it's a fantastic show, but it's enough to show that they've got all the building blocks for a good show and I've just got to sit back and hope that they use that potential well.
The only slight problem with Atlantis was that it triggered thoughts about a new fic. I have too many things that I'm supposed to be doing at the moment, so a new fic is the last thing I need. It's not an Atlantis fic, though. That Five Things fic I did a couple of months ago? The exiles Thing? The 'packing up to go to Atlantis' scenes got me thinking about a continuation of the exiles idea. It's not the first time I've thought about it, but it's the first time the plot bunny has bitten that hard. Not going to write it. Not. Not.
The last good thing from yesterday is slightly silly. I got an email from my local archery company (who I'd inquired with a couple of months ago) about the next set of beginner's courses. I have to take one before I can join an archery company and I've wanted to learn since I was a kid. So I've sent off my form and cheque and in January I will be taking my first steps to becoming an archer. Go me :-)

Date: 2004-10-22 01:14 pm (UTC)There are a few more Teyla/Weir scenes in upcoming episodes, but they're cautious with one another. There are hints of 'we both know what it's like to be in charge and have to make the touch choices' bonding.
The actor who plays Carson really is Scottish, as far as I know, so I hope his accent works.
McKay is adorably geeky and Sheppard is charming, and I am so glad you see the slash potential there.
And didn't you love the Jack/Daniel bits when Jack is reviving. Daniel is so worried about him when he's a popsicle. /g/
The mashed potatoes bit in Lockdown cracked me up. "They don't make good mashed." Hee.
And archery. Cool.
I'm so glad you had a good day.

Date: 2004-10-22 04:01 pm (UTC)Hmmm....
I was under the impression (garner from primarily m/m slash fans, so that may be why) that there wasn't much femslash potential, so I was slightly surprised to see it in the first ep. I may have to check out this list you speak of...
so I hope his accent works
His accent works for me :-) There are a few Highlander episodes that make me wince (and I'm not even Scottish - just a Home Counties English gal), so I was a little wary when people talked about a Scottish character. He's certainly got a convincing accent, which is a bit of a relief :-)
Daniel is so worried about him when he's a popsicle. /g/
I know :-)) I couldn't decide between giggling and making silly 'aww' noises. There were some lovely J/D moments in there and also in Lockdown - the whole "who shot me?" routine in particular.
"They don't make good mashed."
::snort:: I felt for Jack then, faced with these new and potentially world-ending responsibilities. One week you're saving the world, the next week you're sorting out catering problems :-)
And archery. Cool.
Totally and completely cool :-))) There are warnings on all the archery websites now that people who go in expecting to learn to be Legolas are going to be very disappointed. Obviously they must be getting lots of kids (and some adults, probably) who have been 'inspired' by LotR to learn archery. I can safely say the archery thing predates LotR by a long way for me - I did a summer course when I was a teenager and loved it. I just wish that I'd been a bit more foreceful about pursuing it then. Of course, I was a teenager with no money back then, but...

Date: 2004-10-23 08:05 pm (UTC)I really, really hate the baby thing though. And the whole way everyone told Kerry their secrets all of a sudden.

Date: 2004-10-25 02:50 pm (UTC)Although, yeah, I think that Gabriel may get away with it. This time. Again. Grrrr. Someone has to turn him in for something eventually. I had hopes when June almost turned him in and she's starting to get me grouchy because she was such a cool character and her Gabriel story-arc is getting stupid. Bleh.
I felt bad for Smiffy because he's such an adorable character. I'm sure he'll get back to being rational if the writers keep him. There are still plenty of stories that he can do and the writers have to eventually remember that he's ex-SO19 and knows the procedures. Smiffy should never be written out ::pout::
Still, Kerry is dead :-))))))))))))

Date: 2004-10-25 09:13 pm (UTC)I'd agreed with you about June. When's she going to work out what's going on with Jim for a start?
Smiffy should never be written out
Except that he was when he went to SO19. I met him just before he left :)
But yes, Kerry is no more!
