Question about American Presidents

Discussion of the primaries and politics in general has become essential at every meal time in my house now (as I shall be shortly sharing a border) and a question came up today that none of us could answer.

Does the President of the USA receive a salary while he is in office?

If anyone on my lovely knowledgeable flist could point me in the right direction, you'd have the gratitude of the entire Sel clan :-)

Yes he does, and I think the going rate is about $400,000 right now - recently up from 200,000. But I could be wrong on that.



Edit: And of course, he gets to live at the White House and make full use of its staff, and gets skads of other benefits. I don't even know they they buy their own groceries

You're right, though recently was 1999, and the constitution basically says no pay rises during the term of office and no other federal or state money.

I had no idea that it would be that easy! Somehow, I assumed that it would be information that was carefully hidden...

*g* I knew that pretty much all their expenses were basically paid for, which is why I wondered whether they received any kind of salary. Thank you :-)

Hmm, that makes sense. I suppose otherwise the President could vote himself an enormous pay rise, which wouldn't be fair! So if he does vote for a pay rise, it goes to the next guy rather than him. Very sensible.

Hmmm, for some reason I thought it would be more. But I see your point about everything else being 'free'.
