Book sorting

Today I have been sorting my bookcases. I really have an awful lot of books :-)
I catalogued all the hardcovers on LibraryThing as I went so that I wouldn't have to pull my bookcases apart to catalogue them later. I'm working on a new shelf system that has created a ton of new space. As before, fiction and non-fiction are separate. However, organisation of the fiction has changed.
Previously, they were all arranged alphabetically by author regardless of size. There was some attempt at double stacking, but due to the varying sizes of books this did not work terribly well and hence there was a lot of wasted space on my lovely deep shelves. So today I separated out all the hardcover and trade paperbacks. These have now gone onto four bookshelves, with rows of paperbacks in front of them double stacked. The remaining paperbacks have fitted onto a second bookcase, all double stacked. This freed up a lot more space than anticipated, enabling me to have an entire bookcase for reference (arranged by subject as before). I've left a big space for all the Chalet School books I'll be buying from the second hand bookshops (I'm working on an instalment plan with them for over a dozen hardcover books) and a bit of space at the end of each row of books for adding the odd volume. I may need to shift books around a little as the library grows again, but at least there's now expansion space if needed.
Tragically, I've discovered a couple of losses in the field. Pride and Prejudice appears to have gone AWOL, but even more tragically Magic's Price, my favourite Mercedes Lackey, is nowhere to be found. Eeep! How did that happen? I'm going to be hunting all over the next while, but I can't imagine where it's going to be and it isn't in print in the UK :-(( It wasn't that long ago that I last read it, so I have no idea why it's missing. Bleh.
I also discovered a couple of book duplicates and a few books that I definitely won't need to keep, so they've gone into a bag for the bookshop the next time I'm passing. But the good bit is that I've finally cleared the book stacks on my floor and discovered more space to put new ones!
I will be good, though. I really shouldn't buy more books just because I have the space...
As I am now totally exhausted, I'm going to veg out in front of the TV for a while :-)
