Heroes 1.5: Hiros
Mar. 20th, 2007 09:32 amI really need a Heroes icon. And to keep better count of the episode numbering.
At the start of this, I suspected that Peter had no powers and when he flew, it was Nathan helping him.
In some ways, I possibly wasn't wrong but now I'm sure that Peter's power is actually that he can 'borrow' other people's powers. He borrowed Nathan's flying when he needed it and now he's borrowed Isaac's ability to finish the painting of the cheerleader. It's interesting because he's one of the few who actually wants a power and he's given something that only works when other people with abilities are around.
It's also interesting because the only way to find the cheerleader that I can see is for Peter to stay with Isaac, who has good reason to hate him, because Peter can paint without needing to shoot up. That's going to be an interesting thing to explore.
The opening, with the future Hiro, was very interesting. I'm suspecting that that Hiro was from a fair distance in the future - his English only had a tinge of accent left and he seemed much more self-assured, less excitable, than 'our' Hiro. I do like that hint of where our Hiro is going. Hell, I just like Hiro!
Finally getting Hiro, Isaac and Peter to talk was a good, if very frustrating, place to put the cliff-hanger. Damn, this show keeps doing that - very addictive.
I'm determined to stay spoiler-free, but I'm pretty sure that Nikki's mirror-girl is going to do something nasty to her husband. It's a strange power: the mirror-girl seems to be protecting Nikki, but she's also hurting Nikki at the same time.
I did like the cop (still can't remember his name) being able to use his power to start healing his marriage, but I have a very bad feeling about it as well. He's just starting to realise that his abilities could be useful, but at the same time he's getting a taste of the negative side to the telepathy. In many ways, I'm glad that's being explored: it's something that's too easily brushed aside in other superhero stories but it's got to be disturbing to hear the thoughts of everyone around you. The only time I've seen that side explored well was in Buffy. I'm wondering where they're going to take that, but I have a feeling they won't do anything that I expect.
There wasn't much of Claire this week, but she's turning out to be one of the more interesting characters. Or possibly it's more that she seems to be a pivotal character and in an interesting place. Her father scares me and I haven't the faintest idea what his agenda is, but I suspect that he's got something planned for her. It would be far too much of a coindicence that a guy who is catching and testing 'special' people would have adopted a daughter like Claire by accident. I'm suspecting that he in some way knew what she would be and chose her.
Heroes is turning into one of those shows that's completely addictive in part due to the characters and in part due to the mystery of exactly what's going on. We're getting a bit of information each week, but most of the time it just gives us more questions.
In some ways it reminds me of Life on Mars, even though they're completely different shows.
If they can maintain this for several seasons (without going Lost on us), then I'll be a very happy girl.

Date: 2007-03-20 10:13 am (UTC)Now, if you've still got them, go back and watch the first four again. You'll probably spot all sorts of things that you missed the first time (like how bad Peter draws when he's in the hospital bed).

Date: 2007-03-20 10:30 am (UTC)I don't know about several seasons ... But just this season is a roller coaster ... And yes it's ALL about the charcters ...
Oh .. and don't expect a let up from the cliffhangers .. with perhaps two exceptions theres one every episode (in fact probably with no exceptions no I think about it - although one episode has the same cliff hangers as the previous one) ..
Episodes 4 and 5 were vere X Men days of future past and where I think most people get hooked ... as Wimble said now is a good time to revisit the earlier episodes ... so many place you will go ... 'Ahhhh, how did I miss that'.
I deliberately don't post much on peoples Heroes posts if they are watching in the UK - cos it's so Damn hard not to drop a few hints .. but I'm being good ... I'll be so glad when poeple catch up and the UK Fandom starts shaping up ...

Date: 2007-03-20 04:32 pm (UTC)Yup, I realised that during 1.5 too. I wonder if he knows it yet ? And he's going to have some interesting times when he meets the rest of the Hereoes - especially if he can absorb/use more than one power at once.
(hmmmm, just realised - none of the Heroes so far has super strength as a power - Claire is unbreakable, but she's not throwing boulders and cars around just for fun. I'm sure someone will show up with it though ... )
Hiro makes me smile almost every time he's on ... favourite character so far.

Date: 2007-03-20 07:59 pm (UTC)My feeling at the moment is that, whatever they do, I want them to keep this quality up throughout the run. If this means it runs for two seasons rather than five, I'd be more than happy with that just as long as it's two really, really good seasons *g*
cos it's so Damn hard not to drop a few hints
That I can understand *g* But I definitely plan to go back and re-watch because this feels like the kind of multi-layered show that benefits re-watches :-)
And Hiro is fantastic :-D

Date: 2007-03-20 08:03 pm (UTC)I have a feeling that he might be suspecting it, but maybe not consciously thinking about it yet.

Yes, I have a feeling that this could be interesting. It would also be interesting to know how close he needs to be to borrow powers and whether there are any limits to what he can borrow. He only seems to be able to borrow a bit of Nathan's flying, but he was able to borrow Isaac's foresight without needing chemical help, which is more than Isaac can manage.
Unless Isaac is blocking his powers except when he's shooting up. Hmm.
I'm sure someone will show up with it though ... )
It's such a staple of the genre that someone has to, if only so they can subvert it!

Same here :-) And seeing what he could grow into just makes me adore him more. I'm now seeing why the actor was up for a Golden Globe for the role.
