A post about food
I don't think that I want to recap the nightmare that was last week. Suffice to say, I now have some help with some medication side-effects and I am rather more mentally aware than I was. Blergh.
The planned daytrip on Saturday was cancelled due to extreme weather. Instead I sorted out paperwork and cleaned. Yay?
Sunday was pretty quiet and lazy (and OMG so hot) and yesterday I went to see the parade in our city before having a nice quiet afternoon with tea, crumpets and books. In all, the weekend was quiet and just what I needed to recover a little.
We ate lots of food over the weekend in an attempt to stem my weight loss and I'm too scared to get on the scales to see what's happened. After all, the last time I tried the 'eat more food' approach, I lost more weight than ever.
One of the really notable successes of the cooking was a pasta and broccoli bake that was utterly divine. I'm sure it was the asiago and romano cheeses in the cheese sauce. Or possibly the dashes of cayenne and nutmeg. Whatever. It was gorgeous and is totally going to be done again. As a result, Mum has decided that my book of mac and cheese recipes (it's more about all the different ideas around the world that combine some form of cheese with some form of pasta than mac and cheese) is rather lovely and needs to be looked into further.
I may also have concluded that trying out various strong, firm Italian cheeses in the recipes that Canadian cheddar is too mild for will be a good experimental plan. Seriously, even the 'old' cheddars here are fairly bland compared to what I grew up on.
And speaking of cheese...double Gloucester layered with Stilton may be the cheese of the gods. Om nom nom.
I may be a cheese snob. And addict. It's not about quantity, it's about quality and depth of flavour.
Tonight is an experimental food night. Please do not judge me for never, ever having made or eaten tacos before. We've got a kit, we've got some meat and cheese, we're going for it. This will either be very delicious or terrible and Mum will end up with wicked indigestion. Wish us luck?
